The Live-Action Sonic The Hedgehog Movie Is Speeding Up Once Again

Last year, Sega announced it was working on a live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie with Sony Pictures. Not surprisingly, the project didn’t immediately work and Sony recently put it in turnaround. Now Paramount Pictures is picking up the blue speedster and running with him.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fast and Furious producer Neal H. Moritz, along with Deadpool director Tim Miller, will be among the producers on a live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which will be directed by Jeff Fowler, a partner of Miller’s at Blur Studios.

There’s no word on who will be writing the film, which is why there’s no word on what the film will be about. But we can guess it will have to do with Sonic trying to save the world from Doctor Robotnik, and will involve rings and a lot of speed.

Visually, the plan is to blend live-action and CG elements, which we can only assume means that Sonic will be a digital character in the real world. That still doesn’t make us all that excited for what this movie might turn out to be; though the Sonic universe has some cool characters, the games were never about an interesting story. Once a story is created, it’s going to be difficult to keep that interesting while also replicating the pleasures of the game. But hey, if anyone knows movies with speed, it’s Moritz — and if anyone knows how to mix different tones and genres, it’s Miller.
