Barret’s Sailor Suit In Final Fantasy 7 Is Slightly More Hilarious In Japanese

I’ve been playing Final Fantasy 7 in English and Japanese at the same time. I’ve been noticing a lot of tiny little differences. I’ve been pointing them out in a series of videos. Whoa – here is the latest episode of that series!

In today’s episode, our Final Fantasy 7 buddies will meet a little girl whose friend is a dolphin, march in a parade, ride a boat, and wear military uniforms. Barret will dress up as a sailor, which is adorable.

Barret’s sailor outfit is the catalyst for a conversation which includes one of the most popular text boxes in the game, in which Cloud tells Barret, “You look like a bear wearing a marshmallow.” We will explore the Japanese script surrounding this text box in search of its deeper meaning. Somehow, I will end up telling you about a job I used to have.

Also, we’ll learn several different ways to tell someone, in Japanese, that their laughter stinks of horses.

If you’d like to watch all the previous episodes, hey! Look at this! I have them all in a YouTube playlist right here!
