This Week In Games: Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Silly season is winding down. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is out towards the end of the week. Then there's only a handful of games coming out this week and a good number of them are Switch ports.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Switch)

What is it? A giant JRPG with a neat mish-mash of fantasy and sci-fi.
Should you care? If you have even the slightest interest in JRPGs, this game will be your jam.

Here's A Ton Of New Info On Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Just like its predecessors on the Wii and Wii U, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has a unique combat system involving swords, arts and timed attacks.

Black Mirror (PS4, XBO, PC)

What is it? A gothic horror game that has nothing to do with the TV show.
Should you care? Not sick of exploring haunted mansions while slowing going insane? Then maybe.

Outcast: Second Contact (PS4, XBO)

What is it? The first open world action-adventure game, remade for modern platforms.
Should you care? You can ride alien dinosaurs.

Azure Striker Gunvolt: Striker Pack (Switch)

What is it? Fast-paced side scrolling action ported to the Switch.
Should you care? The original 3DS games were ridiculous in all the right ways.

Rime (Switch)

What is it? Solve puzzles as you explore an island, it's kind of pretty.
Should you care? I lost interest halfway through writing the last sentence.

Other than Xenoblade Chronicles 2, it's slim pickings this week. Good thing there were some ridiculous sales over the weekend to tide you over until the next batch of shiny new releases.

Comments

I'm interested in Xenoblade 2 but also kind of over games with 30 different systems to master, so am wary about it. It makes picking up games after a break almost impossible - my current problem with Horizon Zero Dawn.

JRPGs can't really win either way, but I'll give this the benefit of the doubt after XC1 and XCX knew how to roll out the system in steps.

At least being portable I'll have fewer excuses for putting the game down.

Finally someone else who has the same I issue I had with Horizon.

I stopped playing horizon to play BOTW. When I went back I just couldn't pick it up again.

Resident evil revelations 1/2 is also out this week in switch, no? They're alright entries in the series, look pretty good on the hardware, and incorporate some goofy new features (like IR camera reloads).

    eshop only for our market.

How do IR camera reloads work?

You lift the joycon up to eject the clip, then move your other hand up under the joycon to insert the fresh clip. The camera tracks distance.

It's hokey but fun. The motion aiming, on the other hand, looks like the real deal! I never liked the dual stick aiming in RE games since the wii version of 4, and i never finished my playthrough of revelations on the wii u because of that.

But I'm down for it this time.

That sounds like a bit of fun. I think my hands are a little large for the joycons. I really didn't like them joined together but haven't tried them free.

The Wii version of 4 used wiimote aiming, I found it much better than the GC version. Plus it had all the extra stuff that was added to the game after it released originally.

That's this week?! Well already paid and preloaded on Switch a while back so at least my wallet doesn't have to worry about it but fark, I'll guess I'll forgo sleep and play AC Origins for 80hours this week to get it out of the way :p

Still waiting for Hand of Fate 2 on my XBox One

My 7 year old son has been harassing me for Skyrim on the Switch recently. I'm thinking he might actually enjoy Xenoblades better.......he is 300 hours into BOTW.

    Any advice?

Skyrim is a LOT simpler, much more like botw.

I don't know how a 7 year old would get along with the text in xenoblade.

Seems weird saying that silly season is dying down when I feel like I'm still waiting for it to start really? Seems churlish to complain given the amazing start to the year quality wise I guess but I can't remember an end of year/peak release period where I've bought/wanted to buy so little? Can't remember the last time there was genuinely not a lot coming out that excites me? Very strange!!

Wonder how many people have bought some of the recently released titles because they wanted something to play/buy, rather than it being something they spent the year waiting for? Friend bought AC: Origins for exactly that reason & I find myself trawling the store for no reason other than thinking "there must be something good coming out soon?".
