Remember how weird it seemed last year that a live-action Hollywood movie based on Detective Pikachu was getting made? Welcome to 2017, where Ryan Reynolds is in the movie. As Pikachu.
THR report that Reynolds has signed on for a starring role in the project, which begins filming in London early next year.
And by starring they mean starring.
Reynolds will play the titular Detective Pikachu.
The report says that the role “is said to be motion capture in nature”, since it’s a live-action role where Pikachu is digitally inserted. So think Andy Serkis and Gollum.
Only it’s Ryan Reynolds and Pikachu with a hat. He’ll star alongside Justice Smith, the young actor set to appear in the next Jurassic Park movie.
If you’re wondering why sign up a Hollywood actor just to make “PIKA” noises, remember, Detective Pikachu can talk. And however it goes down, at least it can’t be as bad as the last time Pikachu opened its mouth.

*preorders DVD for the blooper reel*
Can I just get the blooper reel separately ? He is amazingly funny when just let loose
Who’s he going to play next, Mega Man? haha
If we couldn’t get De Vito, this is an acceptable compromise.
I love how weird hollywood is. It just won’t stop being bizarre and acting like this is all totally normal.
This joke only works on April 1st
“Live action”
So Ryan Reynolds is going to be playing as Detective Pikachu. Well then screw that Danny Devito. I think Ryan Reynolds will be good at playing Detective Pikachu because I think that new Pokémon film starring Ryan Reynolds is going to be awesome with Detective Pikachu voice acting as Sherlock Holmes and now that Ryan Reynolds has signed up for the project and with filming beginning early next year in London England that’s even better I can’t wait to see the movie. Legendary Pictures keep up the good work.
