The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild managed to snatch the 2017 Game Awards GOTY from a crowded field of contenders that included Mario Odyssey, Persona 5, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and somewhat controversially, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.
“I want to take all of the joy and warmth I’m feeling right now receiving this award and put that back into making Zelda games, to continue to try and surprise all of you,” Nintendo’s Eiji Aonuma said in his acceptance speech.

Well, at least this is similar to the Oscars in how I can complain that in EVERY CATEGORY my favourite titles were robbed. ROBBED, I TELL YOU.
This guy would disagree….
A lot of questionable winners on that list. But to each their own
Sick as. Definitely my personal GotY. I don’t remember a game having me so utterly engrossed and so consistently surprised/happy for many, many years.
So much snore, though atleast Hellblade did well.
Will never understand people’s obsession with BotW, it was pretty boring and uninspired.
So deserving.
I actually don’t remember the last game I enjoyed the way I did BOTW. I’m not sure what it is about it, but it somehow rocketed itself to my top 5 games of all time.
It’s just so gosh darned pleasant!
Eugh!
The Horizon: Zero Dawn Was Robbed Awards!
At least Persona won something, if both of them had been screwed over I would’ve lost all faith in humanity.
ROBBED, I TELL YOU.
Best Role-Playing Game: Persona 5 [WINNER]
Seriously? I found NieR to be way better than that boring mess.
Great to see Swinburne-developed Level Squared get the Student Game award.
Pretty sure that in a few years we’ll be talking about BOTW the same way we talk about Shakespeare in Love.
Best Fighting Game:
[No Winner]
…I think you need to fix that…
There are no winners when we fight, friend.
And if we take nintendo out of our bedroom, Zero Dawn wins all of it’s categories. P5 was good but imo, DOSII takes that title.
Congratulations Nintendo on winning the game of the year award for The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild along with best game direction and best Action/Adventure award. Super Mario Odyssey for best family game and best strategy game Ubisoft’s Mario+Rabbids Kingdom Battle I hope you bring some DLC or maybe a sequel for Super Mario Odyssey soon Nintendo. Again congratulations on winning the game of the year award keep up the good work Nintendo and I’ll see you in 2018 for more great games coming to the Nintendo Switch.
Good job, I was part way through the 3rd line before I twigged and checked the user name.
As much as I love Marino + Rabbids… Total War Warhammer II should’ve taken that.
Mario won best strategy game… I do not understand what is happening, What is up, What is down, Idk anymore.
Some people just have a hard-on for anything Nintendo. It’s the same thing that inexplicably makes some people prefer alcopops over fine wine.
Zelda’s not an RPG anymore?
Hasn’t been for a long time. More of an action adventure.
