Australia Takes Home Second Place In International Cosplay Championships

The Commonwealth Games isn’t the only international competition Australia is taking home medals in right now. The yearly international Crown Championships of Cosplay was held in Chicago over the weekend, with the Australian representative AmenoKitarou taking home second place behind US champion Alchemical Cosplay.

Aussie champ AmenoKitarou spent the last 390 days building his huge interpretation of the Final Fantasy X summon Bahamut. The larger-than-life costume includes a huge set of wings and stilts, all of which had to be transported (very carefully) over to the US for the competition.

The winning costume made by Alchemical Cosplay was also from the Final Fantasy series, of an Au Ra Astrologian from FFXIV.

Our second place win is the second time Australia has placed at the international competition, after Aussie cosplayer Major Sam took home the top spot back in 2016.

We caught up with AmenoKitarou after his national win in Sydney to ask him about his cosplay history and the tips he had for future competitors. You can see that whole video from our Kotaku Cosplayers Australia Facebook group here:
