This Week In Games: Freeze, Donkey Kong

Not long after the Switch launched, I remember someone saying – Mark perhaps – that the console was so good, Nintendo should just remaster every first and second-party game they ever released for the Wii U.

This week, that’s exactly what Nintendo is doing with the release of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. And there’s also a new Total War game this week, with Creative Assembly’s unveiling Thrones of Britannia: A Total War Saga.

Here’s the pick of the bunch this week:

  • Thrones of Britannia: A Total War Saga (PC)
  • Visceral Cubes (PC)
  • AFL Evolution Season Pack 2018 (PS4, XBO)
  • Viking Brothers 2 / 3 / 4 (PC)
  • Hide or Die (PC)
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Switch)
  • City of Brass (PC, PS4, XBO)
  • Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality (PSVR)
  • Nihilumbra (Switch)
  • Super Mega Baseball 2 (PC, PS4, XBO)
  • Hanse – The Hanseatic League (PC)
  • Perfect Angle (Switch)
  • NEOGEO: Stakes Winner (Switch)
  • Johnny Turbo’s Arcade: Sly Spy (Switch)

Let’s run through the highlights, shall we? Baseball isn’t my preferred sport of choice, but if you’re partial to the great American pastime then here’s what you can expect from Super Mega Baseball 2:

City of Brass has been going through early access, but if you’ve missed it entirely here’s a taster.

Something that will probably get ignored a lot this week is Hanse, a game about being a 15th century merchant in Europe. It’s given me a few Machiavelli The Prince vibes, although it doesn’t look like you get to float into a city and find the Holy Grail. Nonetheless, you’ve got historical ship types, trading routes, plus political manoeuvring to maintain and gain the favour of key allies.

Total War fans have had their fill of footage already, but if you’re wondering what Creative Assembly’s take on the Britons squaring off Gaelics, Vikings and other factions looks like, here’s some footage to digest.

And last but not least, Tropical Freeze:

So that’s it. One of the quieter weeks to finish off April/kick off May. See anything that takes your fancy this week?
