If you’ve been dying for a bit of Heroes of Might & Magic mixed with Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri, then Triumph Studios’ upcoming Age of Wonders: Planetfall might be worth a bookmark. Based on the developer’s Age of Wonders series (surprise!), Planetfall transplants the formula from mystical medieval to the celestial sci-fi.
Going from the game’s description on Steam, Planetfall doesn’t stray far from the mechanics of Age of Wonders — or 4X in general — featuring turn-based combat, different technologies to develop your civilisation and diplomacy to stop the AI from crushing you while you build a semblance of an army.
That said, the campaign will have an “emergent story” based on “the history of the fallen galactic empire”, so the single-player won’t consist of just firing up the skirmish mode.
The only release date provided in “2019”, so we’re in for a bit of a wait. Still, I’m always up for more sci-fi 4X titles, though I’m still waiting for the day something tops Birth of the Federation and Ascendancy.
