With the Resident Evil 2 remake on the way (excite), let's take a moment to remember the mysterious, green-jacketed figure hidden in the deep background of Resident Evil 4. It wasn't until 2017 that someone found them — 12 years after the game's release — and over a year on, we still don't know who it is. Warning: RE4 spoilers ahead.
A YouTube user by the name of SR212787 spotted the character last January. Just after the death of Mike during chapter 5-4, if you zoom in with the rifle scope on some of the background structures, the outline of what looks like a person is barely visible.
No wonder it took over a decade for someone to find them.
If you disable the fog effects, take control of the camera and fly over, the person — a billboarded sprite, rather than a 3D model — becomes easier to see. But not by much.
Here's a GIF to make it super clear (in the second frame, I've bumped up the levels).
Sadly, no one knows who the mystery person is, with nothing from Capcom (which isn't surprising). The best theory is that it's one of the developers, probably an artist, or a friend or relative of someone on the team.
The fact is, we may never know the person's identity. In the grand scheme of things, it's not a big deal... but it sure is going to bug me every time I see anything Resident Evil-related.
When Resident Evil 2 released in 1998, it had to follow up on a game that defined a new genre of horror. Not only did it manage to improve the formula, it went on to be what many people consider the best game in the series.
