Samsung Portable SSD X5: Australian Price And Release Date

Yesterday we reported on the details surrounding Samsung’s new SSD X5 portable SSD. And now know how much it will set you back in Australia.

Being an external solid state drive, it’s not going to be as quick as an internal one. But damn if Samsung isn’t having a good hard crack at it with up to 2,800 MB/s read and up to 2,300 write speeds for the 2TB and 1TB versions, with the 500MB being a little slower.

This is a huge upgrade on the previous generation T5 which offered 1TB and maxed out at 540 MB/s.

That being said, you’re going to need a rig that has Thunderbolt 3 to get the best performance out of the new X5, so keep that in mind when you look at the test stats.

We have all the finer details around this new hardcore SSD right here, but here are the cold hard specs:

  • 2TB/1TB/500GB
  • Tunderbolt 3 (40 Gbps)
  • 119 x 62 x 19.7mm/150g
  • MacOS Sierra 10.12 and Windows 10 64-bit RS 2 or higher
  • Up to 2,800 MB/s sequential read speeds
  • Up to 2,300 MB/s sequential write speeds (2,100 MB/s for the 500GB)
  • AES 256-bit hardware encryption

Claudio Cardile, Director, B2B Sales, Samsung Electronics Australia said:

“Samsung has developed the new Portable SSD X5 for people who demand the ultimate performance and portability and this includes people working in creative and digital fields who require fast, reliable technology that does not compromise on delivering the best possible outcomes.”

“The Portable SSD X5 will help Australians edit high resolution videos, render 3D images, and engage in other data-heavy activities quickly and on the go.

“With sequential read speeds of up to 2,800 MB/s, the Portable SSD X5 marks a new chapter in portable storage for Samsung. Capable of transferring a 20GB 4K video file in approximately 12 seconds [Motherboard-Asus Strix Z270E Gaming, Intel® Core i5-7600 @3.5 GHz, DDR4 1066MHz 4GB, OS-Window 10×64 test configuration], we believe Australians will be amazed by what X5 will empower people to do.

All of the new Samsung SSD X5s will be available from September 3, 2018 and will start at $629 for the 500GB, $1,099 for the 1TB and $2,199 for the 2TB models.

There isn’t a lot to be done about the added bulk or pain of wrangling cables, and while an external SSD usually can’t compete with the transfer speeds of having a solid-state drive inside your machine, Samsung’s new portable X5 just made a few giant performance leaps towards catching up — if you have $US1400 ($1911) just laying around.”]
