The First Onimusha Is Getting Remastered

The 2001 action-adventure game Onimusha: Warlords is getting a remaster, publisher Capcom said today. It’ll be out on 15 January 2019 for PS4, Xbox One, PC and Switch.

The remaster, which runs $US20 ($27), will come with “updated features including high-definition graphics, widescreen display option, analogue stick support, a readily available Easy Mode option, and new soundtrack,” Capcom said. Australian pricing has not yet been confirmed.

This one is a little out of the blue. The Onimusha series both started and ended on the PlayStation 2, with three main games and a couple of spinoffs (along with a browser game that’s best not mentioned).

Onimusha: Warlords is set in feudal Japan and stars a katana-wielding warrior, Samanosuke Akechi, as he sets out to rescue a princess.

Absolutely loved the hell out of this back in the day & played it to death - wonder how it holds up today? If Resi still holds up (in terms of fixed camera/controls etc) then it stands to reason this should too, might have to grab this, especially with a Switch version coming & a $cheap-ish price buuut with having to pick & choose what to buy/play more & more with incessant announcements/reveals/releases maybe I should leave the past in the past... Hmm.

Its not world-on-fire , but the games were good, so I for one welcome our remaster overlords.

As much as I love this series, they’ve really done a lazy upgrade on the visuals.

Oh heck. I thought that was just the original trailer until I saw the release date... That’s a bit disappointing. Also that voice acting is awful.. I don’t remember it being that bad but maybe I’m just used to better voice acting in games nowdays.

I think it was re-recorded. I’ll probably still get it but it’s not a great way to reintroduce the series

It does sound more high fidelity, you're right. Either they went back to the original assets and remixed/encoded them differently, or they might have re-recorded like you say. I went back to watch clips of the original dialogue on YouTube and they are woeful. Progression hey?

I absolutely loved the first two games. Third was alright.

Visuals and speed of this remaster is a bit off. Speed wise, it seems slowed down a bit. Booo. Graphics look off somewhat.

Capcom I'd love nothing more than a PC remaster of this game and the sequel, but do it right please.
