Someone Finally Managed To 100% Doom 2's Infamous MAP15

You've got to give the id Software of old credit — it takes a certain level of genius to hide a secret so well that even with mod tools, source code and over 20 years of time, people still couldn't figure out how to trigger it. Until now, that is. Doom 2's infamous MAP15, also known as "Industrial Zone", has finally been 100 per cent completed.

It's important to note that we've known about the secret for a long time. The problem was no one knew how to trigger it without cheating, which meant maxing out at 90 per cent completion through normal play.

Speedrunner Zero Master managed to figure it out last week, recording a video of his efforts to save us the trouble of playing ourselves.

So difficult was the secret to find and trigger, even John Romero was impressed.

Romero also posted a follow-up tweet explaining the mechanics of the secret.

Very clever. So clever, in fact, it took decades for someone to figure it out.

that's pretty darn neat! how's that for closure?

That's one hell of a beastly level though, it just kept going!

A fair amount of that was repeats of the same section in order to trigger the secrets. You'll see that par time for the level is 3:30 and this took 8:20. Here's an example of an any% run of MAP15 completed in 30 seconds flat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01q4CiYYSgs

I’m surprised it took so long if people knew where it was. I’d have assumed certain doom nuts out there had worked out this mechanic long ago in relation to monsters pushing characters over teleporters.

    dat headline

Weird, tried to post but it didn't appear. Sorry if this one turns out to be a duplicate post.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's been completed multiple times over the years. Just by people who were unaware that it's a whole big thing. If you didn't know it was a big deal you wouldn't brag about it on the internet.

damn... that was awesome to watch. that was like poetry in motion.
