Fallout 76 Quietly Unlocks Frame Rate Without Breaking The Game

Fallout 76 just got a huge patch today, resulting in people downloading 15GB at best and the entirety of the game again at worst. But if you’re on PC, there’s one unannounced benefit: unlocked frame rates are actually playable now.

You could always unlock the frame rate in Fallout games before, but it came at a cost. The game’s physics was tied to the frame rate, and running the game beyond the previous lock of 60fps (or 63fps, as it’s been in Fallout 76 since the beta) would set off a massive chain reaction, resulting in corpses having a spasm and carts launching into space.

Fallout 76, however, appears to no longer have that issue. Here’s a couple of videos from users today illustrating the game running around 90-100fps outside, and around 160fps and 170fps indoors, without the physics cracking the shits.

So far, so good. To unlock the frame rate, you’ll have to navigate to the Fallout76Prefs.ini file. You can find that in the Documents/My Games/Fallout 76 folder in the account of the username you logged into Windows with; it’s not located in the main Fallout 76 install directory.

Once you’re there, search for the “iPresentInterval” setting and change the value from 1 to 0. Save the file, set it to read-only if you want to be sure. It’s worth making sure that VSync isn’t enabled in your Nvidia/AMD control settings as well. Fire up Fallout 76 again, and you should start seeing increased frame rates – you might want to use the FPS counter in the GeForce Experience overlay, AMD’s Radeon Overlay, or a third party monitor like Fraps, PrecisionX, and so on.

I’ll be mucking around with this more over the next 24 hours. And it’s worth noting that you might want to test how stable this is – if your machine is only capable of running the game closer to 60 or 63fps, that’ll be much more preferable than a game constantly jumping from 70fps to 110fps. But hey! At least gamers have the choice, and we can make it without enemies launching through our face into the next dimension.
