This Week In Games: Dead In The DiRT

I've always had a soft spot for the DiRT series, or at least the iterations that spent more time on rally than the X Games-themed mania. So for those with a similar preference, or the more serious drivers who preferred DiRT Rally's less stringent rally handling, this week offers good news.

DiRT Rally 2 drops in a few days, and alongside that for major releases is Dead or Alive 6. It'll be interesting to see how that goes with the FGC this year, although Smash Ultimate and Dragon Ball Fighter Z are unlikely to be dethroned as the major titles.

Beyond that, there's a new LEGO Movie game out, a top-down shooter based on the Emu War, Stellaris drops on consoles, Undertale's deltarune expansion hits the Switch and, out of nowhere, there's a new Toe Jam & Earl game.

So still a busy week, just not quite as flashy.

DOA6 seemed more appealing than I was expecting, after the demo this past weekend (despite the criminally short story section of the demo, at least training seemed to let you play with all characters and even a number of outfits for each), whereas the Trials Rising "open beta" actually did the opposite for me; despite having played thru the last ~3 or so of them (yes, even the Blood Dragon Trials!).

The new Toejam & Earl didn't really come out of nowhere seeing it's had steady updates on Kickstarter over the last ~four years or so, will be interesting to hear online how it turned out though.

It’s all about Trials this week.

Arent you 'slightly' biased with Trials Rising? :p

I know someone around here was involved in it over the past couple of years, and without trawling through the comments to figure out who, your name seems familiar.

If so, all the best with it. Hope it really works.

        No. That would be Fatshady.

Not biased at all. Fusion was my first trials game and I instantly fell in love with it (also played blood dragon). And to be honest rising seems not as good from the beta, but still going to be a fun game.

Ah fair enough. Still, same to him.

I know what you mean, I was the same with Trackmania. Neither are overly complicated, but have a novel puzzle element that can be quite entertaining. The lack of complication (at least in gameplay mechanics that is) makes them very easy to pick up and understand.

Is there a way to get in touch with FatShady thru here, or some other way? Press Start is reporting that there's an event in Indonesia called "Bali Blast", partly set in a nightclub. Honestly that's pretty darn on the nose, and hits a bit too close to home for my liking. Perhaps FS could ask RedLynx to update the name out of respect...

Yes I saw that. Pretty poor taste.

I would say best way to get a message to him would be through the University Of Trials Twitter. He replies pretty quick from my interactions.

Also very keen to give Stellaris a look when I get back from 2 weeks away. Been hanging out for a 4X game like this on console.

Seems the DOA 6 voice acting is as dodgy as ever.

    "I have no time for..."

    *balls drop*

    "...games."
