Daedalic Entertainment, the German studio famous for their series of narrative-driven adventures, has announced they're working on an action-adventure in the Lord of the Rings universe ... starring Gollum.
The game isn't due out until 2021, and as a result there's very little details available right now. Daedlic's CEO Carsten Fichtelmann mentioned that the game will be centred on Gollum's years "before we learn about what happens to him in the books", according to an interview with PC Gamer.
"This is also something you'll play in the game," Fichtelmann explained. "You'll come to decisions you have to make, and you'll have the two voices talking to you. He may change his mind, and this is a clue about how it will play."
How an action-adventure game works without being completely reliant on stealth will be interesting, but that'll depend on how far ahead of the books the game is set, and what kind of powers Gollum gets from the Ring (if he has it by that stage). Daedalic has also developed some tactical RPGs alongside their suite of point-and-click adventures - Blackguards and Blackguards 2 were based on the German pen-and-paper RPG The Dark Eye.
So the studio has some grounding in this field. Still, Gollum? He's far and away one of the most unlikable characters in the Lord of the Rings universe, without fail. Daedlic's biggest challenge will be finding a way to make Gollum a protagonist you want to go on a journey with. Fortunately, the company has plenty of time to work it out.

Gollum? Seriously, what about all the other possible protagonists? Beren? Eärendil? Turgon? Glorfindel? Húrin? Túrin Turambar? Galadriel!? Too many to list.
This looks like it will be in the vane of Styx, because Gollum (even with the Ring) was not a fighter. He relied on stealth and surprise for survival. Even with the Ring, he'd been driven from his community and hounded until he ended up in the depths under the Misty Mountains.
I hope to be surprised, but at the moment I just can't see a game about Gollum living under a Mountain for 400 years being exciting.
MARKETING!
But the books already tell exactly what happened to him, as @zambayoshi says:
Hooray! More terrible Andy Serkis impressions!
Are you talking about Shadow of War? Because Liam O'Brien did an excellent job with his voicework for Gollum in that game.
Someone didn't watch/read LOTR otherwise you'd know he had the ring long before he became "Gollum".
This could be "interesting". Lots of sitting around stroking the Ring, coming up with riddles and eating fish raw.
Yeah, I don't need another life sim.
