This Week In Games: Samurai Souls

I hope you like a challenge.

What happens when From Software crafts a tale about vengeance and redemption in feudal Japan? We’ll find out soon, when Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

I’ve not been able to play the game at all, so I’m coming in completely fresh. Save for two things: I’ve been told it’s hard, and also that it’s on PC, which apparently a ton of people have forgotten of late.

Beyond that, it’s a huge week for the Switch ports wise. The first Turok remaster from Nightdive Studios hits the platform, as does Unravel 2. Symmetry is a really unique looking survival management sci-fi game, and the platform is getting Fate/EXTELLA Link at launch as well.

Plus, Grand Prix Story is great. There’s an arcade football game in Super Kickers League as well, if that’s your style.

Here’s what’s out this week:

  • Turok (Switch)
  • Unravel 2 (Switch)
  • Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (PC, PS4, XBO)
  • Caligula Effect: Overdose (PS4, Switch)
  • Symmetry (Switch)
  • Grand Prix Story (Switch)
  • Fate/EXTELLA Link (PC, PS4, Switch)
  • Phar Lap Horse Racing Challenge (PS4, XBO)
  • Men of War – Assault Squad 2 (PC Retail)
  • Hell Warders (XBO)
  • Tyd wag vir Niemand (XBO)
  • Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon EVERY BUDDY! (PS4, Switch)
  • Save Koch (PC)
  • Two Point Hospital: Pebberley Island (PC)
  • Out of the Park Baseball 20 (PC)
  • Super Phantom Cat (Switch)
  • Super Kickers League (Switch)
  • Assault on Metaltron (Switch)

Right. Let’s get onto the trailers, starting with what the hell Tyd wag vir Niemand is all about.

See anything you like this week?

  • Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice on PC at launch will be my go-to, between bouts of The Division 2. Normally soulslikes are big screen experiences for my but I can’t look past getting 60FPS or more on day one. I think Sekiro is going for 60FPS on console now, but from DigitalFoundry’s analysis of the demo code there was a long way to go for it to be locked at that frame rate

  • What happens when From Software crafts a tale about vengeance and redemption in feudal Japan? You get Tenchu? Yes, I know, technically FromSoftware didn’t create the series but they more or less had a hand of some kind in everything after Tenchu 2. Heck, Sekrio itself was originally going to be a new Tenchu game until they decided to respect the IP and make something inspired by it instead.

In other words, the fact that Sekiro evokes strong feelings of nostalgia for Tenchu, Bushido Blade and other Samurai/Ninja games of old generates endless hype inside me.

  • Yeah I hope it has something of a Tenchu vibe about. From what I’ve seen it might be a bit too button-mashy for me but I hope I’m pleasantly surprised.

  • I’ve been looking forward to this week for a while. If I had the money I’d be buying Caligula Effect, Fate/Extella, and Turok but the game I am most excited for is, without a doubt, Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon Every Buddy!

  • Day one for Sekiro. Can’t wait! Hoping it unlocks for pre-load on Steam so my trash internet can have it ready by Friday night.
