Video game publisher Ubisoft announced it will be donating €500,000, or about $784,348, to help with rebuilding the Notre-Dame Cathedral following a fire that ravaged the historic monument earlier this week. In addition, the company said Assassin’s Creed Unity, which features a recreation of the Cathedral, will be free to download on PC for the next week.
“We stand in solidarité with our fellow Parisians and everyone around the world moved by the devastation the fire caused,” Ubisoft said in a statement.
“Notre-Dame is an integral part of Paris, a city to which we are deeply connected. Seeing the monument in peril like this affected us all. In light of Monday’s events, we will be donating €500,000 to help with the restoration and reconstruction of the Cathedral.”
The company’s donation will go toward a rebuilding fund that has already reached $1 billion in combined pledges.
France’s President, Emmanuel Macron, has vowed that the restoration effort will be completed within the next five years, though some experts suggest it could take longer.
Part of that rebuilding effort will likely entail referencing existing repositories of measurements and digital photographs of the Cathedral, the original construction of which began back in 1163.
Given the intense, two-year long effort to recreate the Cathedral in Assassin’s Creed Unity, a game which largely takes place in 18th-century Paris, there’s been speculation that it could be used to aid in the restoration effort.
The Cathedral appears proportionally 1:1 with its real-world counterpart, and is arguably one of the most sweeping and detailed buildings to ever appear in game.
However, despite the complexity and size, Ubisoft told Kotaku it’s not a completely faithful recreation. “It is important to keep in mind that what we did for the game was not a scientific reconstruction but rather an artistic vision,” a spokesperson for Ubisoft said in an email.
“While we wanted to be very precise with details, there are some differences in terms of scale and with some elements. That being said, we would be more than happy to lend our expertise in any way that we can to help with these efforts.”
For now, anyone interested in exploring the Cathedral untouched by this week’s fire through Ubisoft’s artistic lense can do so by downloading Unity from the company’s website.

It’s the least they can do after letting thousands of people climb all over it :p
Seriously though, good on em.
Classy move by Ubisoft. The more people that can appreciate Notre Dame, the better. Even interacting with it in game is a really awe-inspiring experience. I’d encourage anyone who hasn’t played Unity to download it.
And if anyone would like to donate anything to the reconstruction fund, use this link – established by French government – 100% to the reconstruction of the building:

Although Unity got the bagging it arguably deserved, sneaking into Notre Dame is still a gaming highlight for me.
Maybe this terrible accident can bring a little unity (see what I did) to this often nasty world.
It was still better than syndicate
Heh lol… I guess. Syndicate was still an enjoyable experience IMHO 🙂
I imagine they’re paying for three or four hay carts to be strategically placed there.
