Elite Player Took Some Beautiful Screenshots Of His 18-Week Journey Across Space

Earlier this year, a group of Elite: Dangerous players set out on an expedition that would take them across the entire Milky Way, all 130,000 light years of it.

The journey took months, and some of its most beautiful and bizarre sights have been captured by aes3297 in this collection of screenshots.

There are shots from space, of course:

But some of my favourites are from the times when he took a little break and deployed the buggy for some ground-level photography.

Elite is a very dark, cold and lonely game, yet it’s also one of staggering beauty and remarkable achievements (like the creation of this expedition), and these shots manage to capture all of that.

He’s of course far from the only person to have taken screenshots along the way (there were around 14,000 pilots making the trip, after all!), but I just thought these were nice enough to share here.

You can see more of aes3297's images from the trip here.

I really should go back to this game. I liked it, but in the end it just felt like it was taking too much time for too little reward.

But geez it's pretty - I damn near wore out the Share button on my PS4 controller playing it.

I've tried a few times but the biggest problem is that there's just nothing much to do in the game. It's mostly shuttling goods around or doing cookie-cutter missions. There's a universe to visit but pretty much no reason to do so.

It's a sandbox game.its up to you to find joy in it. I've always thoroughly enjoyed it. There's loads of other stuff to do.

Such as? Genuinely curious, might go back to it again if there's something compelling outside of mindlessly stacking credits.

You can go exploring, Visit SOL (Mars is terraformed in the game which is an amazing sight). Do community missions. Join a clan and do stuff with them. There is also just stock standard combat which is always interesting especially in open play.

You can also roleplay, Best experience i had was getting interdicted by a guy roleplaying as 14th-century pirate that had travelled into the future and was continuing his piracy on a galactic scale.

This is a good video to look at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPL8ML7cq1w

I sympathise, and for me the docking process (albeit automated) is a complete waste of my life. I get it that it’s meant to be “realistic” (whatever that means in a game like this), but that docking repetition just kills me. If that was removed (eg just teleport in once you get to a minimum distance) I’d enjoy the missions and the sandbox components (exploration, mining, etc) so much more. I can’t sit there and watch the auto-docking any more.

For me, the satisfaction of spending many months building up cash to buy my Anaconda was worth the price of admission alone.

Now I just need to work on the half-billion credits I need to fully A-class it out.

The game is really about living the fantasy of piloting your own space ship among the stars, and you kind of have to put in what you want to get out of it. If it doesn't work for you, then that's fully understandable. For those who can get into this game, however, it's one of the best experiences of this generation of games.
