Popular YouTuber Etika Dies At 29

Today, police confirmed the death of Desmond “Etika” Amofah, a well-known gaming YouTuber, after discovering him in Manhattan’s East River yesterday evening. Amofah’s body was found two days after police recovered his belongings on the Manhattan Bridge. Last week, he had published a video that appeared like a suicide note.

Amofah, 29, was born in Brooklyn, New York. He began creating videos on YouTube in 2012, and over the course of seven years, amassed a following of over 800,000 dedicated fans across YouTube and Twitch. He referred to them as the JoyCon Boyz, after the Nintendo Switch controllers.

Playing and commentating on Nintendo games for his fans, Amofah imbued what he loved with electricity and personality. Amofah’s charisma, candor, and ingenuity as a content creator launched him into the constellation of internet stardom.

Amofah began to publicly struggle with mental health last October, when he self-destructed his YouTube channel and, on Reddit, made references to suicidal ideation. In April, police detained Amofah after he threatened suicide in his apartment, they told Kotaku, citing his “psych history.” The incident resulted in Amofah’s admission into a hospital.

In May, Amofah had an altercation with a security guard or police officer that led to another hospital visit.

Last week, Amofah published a video, which YouTube took down, apparently saying goodbye to fans. “It was a fun life,” he said. “I had a great time. It was great. But for it to be cut so short—it’s fucked.” Friends and family had been unable to contact Amofah since before the video was posted.

Reached over the phone today, an NYPD representative offered this comment: “At approximately 18:18 hours [yesterday], police responded to a 9-11 call with a person floating in the water in the vicinity of the South Street Seaport in the confines of the 1st Precinct. Upon arrival, officers discovered an unresponsive, unidentified male at that location. The NYPD harbour removed the male to Pier 16, where EMS pronounced him deceased. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death and the investigation is ongoing.”

If you or someone you know is at risk of suicide, you can call Lifeline Australia at 13 11 14 or use their crisis support chat. A list of other services available to Australians online and over the phone can be found here.

To think he was still reacting to nintendo’s E3 just a couple weeks ago...

    I’m gonna miss Etika.
    Rest In Peace.

This is an absolute blow to the gaming community on why Etika would commit suicide and just jump off the Brooklyn Bridge just to die at age 29.
I just don't know what to say but I'm absolutely devastated and so are the other Youtubers on why Etika would jump off the Brooklyn Bridge just to lose his own life.
But listen if you or someone you know is experiencing mental health issues there is 24/7 help and support available you can contact BeyondBlue on 1300 22 4636 or Lifeline on 13 11 14.
    Rest In Peace Etika.

Ok... So, here's a question. What triggered his downward spiral? What led him to post what he did on his Youtube channel at the start? Was it even him who did it? Like, I don't know why, but I feel like there's more to this than him being depressed...

I'm no psych but he reminds me a lot of someone who might've been bipolar/BPD

This behaviour is pretty common in people in the lead up to people committing suicide. It seems like you're insinuating a conspiracy of some kind?

Probably due to lack of knowledge on the subject. A lot of people don't know there are various forms of it either. And just go by the "well something must have caused it".

      What triggered his downward spiral?

Some mental illnesses are created by traumatic or unpleasant experiences. Some are unknown.

Was it even him who did it?

It looks very likely that this was suicide. It's possible he was murdered or had an accident but the history of mental illness, suicidal thoughts and behaviour strongly suggest it was suicide. They are doing an autopsy which should gain some insight.

Like, I don't know why, but I feel like there's more to this than him being depressed...

This is not the time to start a conspiracy theory.

Should have clarified, when I asked who did it, I was referring to the uploading of the Porn to his Youtube. I know he said he did it, but if someone was blackmailing him. I don't know.

Perhaps he never appreciated his fame?

I think it was Mark Knopfler, the guitarist, who said that 'If there's one thing good about fame, someone should really tell me'.

The loss of this young man is terribly sad, whatever his reasons for his actions.

There's very few things good about being famous, the negatives far outweigh them. I don't understand the "appreciate fame" thing?

Singer of Counting Crows used to change the lyrics of Mr Jones when singing live from "when everybody loves you, that's just about as happy as you can be" to "... as fucked up as you can be."

I hope he's found the peace he longed for. Rest easy.

Psychology and Psychiatry is a very difficult branch of medicine to get someone help in, at least through the public system. Most of the time you have to shell out of your own pocket to get someone the help that's needed.

To anyone here that struggles, keep fighting, and keep seeking help. Eventually you'll find it.

Psychology and Psychiatry is a very difficult branch of medicine to get someone help in, at least through the public system. This, exactly - we've got loads of methods of forcing people to 'get help' but they still ultimately have to accept it. But this was in the US, and their god-awful nightmarish healthcare system is even worse.

I'd love to know these forms to be honest.

But it's so much easier (and cheaper) to not.

Why doesn’t this article have a source?

The article clearly says it is based on information the journalist got by contacting the NYPD directly. What more are you after?

A link, so I could better believe it with my own eyes.
I googled it myself, and found the proof, and I'm no better for it.

So what's the point then, moron? F****** trolls these days are everywhere.

            Tell me about it.
I was hoping it wasn't true, since proclaiming someone died without a source is pretty flimsy these days. Maybe the source was malicious or incorrect. But sadly, looking it up myself, it's confirmed true. That poor soul has passed away far too soon, the sourceless article was not incorrect, and here we are now.

On a side note, fuck you.

Razor was trying to get more knowledge on this subject, gets called a F******* moron and then gets down voted for responding to said person.

What the hell is wrong with this community?

It's not a sourceless article, the source is an NYPD spokesperson. Wanting a link for your convenience is one thing, but dismissing the source outright because it was over the phone is irrational.

I will wholly admit that I am at fault here. When I first read the article, I missed the "source". Seeing is believing, and I wanted to see it for myself. If there was no hyperlink then maybe there was a chance, you know? Just the smallest chance that maybe someone was wrong, and that just maybe that young man still had a chance at being discovered alive and well. There's definitely some irrationality behind that.
Doesn't really excuse Ody's reply though.

The site literally ate my reply, wow.

I appreciate your view. I'd probably go looking for more if I cared about it too. It just felt like you were dismissing a legit source because it wasn't online and that felt weird. I probably came across too harsh in my last part, I didn't mean any hostility.

It is very sad when someone decides to take their own life.

One would hope that his family and friends had tried to help him before he got to such a state, but as a commenter above said, the help if given, must be accepted.

A lot of people aren't in the frame of mind to accept. A lot of people want help but turn it dowm, because you brain can play tricks on you, to put it simply.

I've struggled with anxiety and depression for the majority of my life. I know how it feels to stand on the bridge looking down and preparing for it all to just end. Thankfully, I was able to get the help I needed before taking that final leap.

May you rest now at peace, Desmond. Your pain is over and though the world is dimmer for the loss of your light, we respect your courage. Depression is a war in the mind and the heart that not all soldiers can win. To die in the battle is a tragedy, but it makes you no less of a warrior.

To all those still fighting the war of depression, please try to reach out for help. The more weapons you have in this fight, the better your chances of survival.

“I had a great time. It was great. But for it to be cut so short—it’s fucked.”

Yeah, particularly because you're the one cutting it short!

Stuff like this shows that mental health is no joke and professional help is absolutely necessary, it just won't make sense to anyone else on the outside, if they even show it in the first place. He certainly had the means and the support to seek that help, even in the third world country of america with it's broken systems, I guess we'll never know why he didn't.

I've had a doctor tell me it's not real. I've had a nurse say I'm wastong her time. This is in australia. There's a good chance he did ask for help amd never received it.

To add, the best one was "sorry your interstate, our services are only available for residents within this state"
