Blizzard Really Wants Overwatch Characters In Smash

With Overwatch due out on the Switch next week, it’s obviously time for fans to start incessantly calling for characters like Pharah and Mercy to make an appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The loudest voice among them, though, will belong to Blizzard themselves.

In an interview with IGN, Blizzard’s Jeff Kaplan was asked which Overwatch character he’d like to see in Smash, and replied “To the Smash Brothers team, whatever character you want, we love them all. They’re all our babies, you can have any single one of them. We have 31 to choose from.”

“Tracer’s our girl, Tracer’s our mascot. She’d be my first choice,” he added. “There’s a lot of great runners up. I think a lot of people can immediately see Doomfist gameplay applying to Smash, but if it were up to me, I’d like to see Tracer.”

Or Reinhardt. Or Reaper. Or Sombra. Or Zarya. Or, look, like he says, any of them, they’d pretty much all fit.

Overwatch is out on the Switch on October 16.

I don't really think Overwatch has been around long enough to be considered for Smash, to be honest. Smash for the most part focuses on characters from legacy franchises that have been around for a long time, and Overwatch just doesn't fit that category.

To a agree to a degree. I mean, Joker could hardly be considered legacy. I think the issue might be more of a tonal mismatch than anything else. I think D.Va would be amazing given her kit, plus a new heavy would be nice. I just don't think Smash and Overwatch IP are miscible.

Joker himself may not necessarily be legacy but the Persona series he belongs to definitely is - the first game was released in 1996. Overwatch does not have that kind of legacy. Maybe something like Warcraft or Starcraft does if you're talking about Blizzard franchises but Overwatch? Nah.

Just feels like a terrible fit to be honest. Stick with Japanese classics.

Banjo and Kazooie set a precedent for non-Japanese classics though.

Not saying Overwatch should be represented (though I wouldn't be upset by it personally), but specifically Japanese classics are no longer the limit.

No thanks. Keep that trash out.
I doubt any western characters without a strong Nintendo history have a chance anyway.

Doom and BJ for Smash before anyone else, after all they have been on nintendo consoles before

Oh I'm all aboard the Doom train. Even got a Nintendo exclusive in Doom 64; the canon entry that leads into Doom 2016.
Not getting my hopes up, but I will keep my fingers crossed.

If you're going to put a British woman in tight clothing with two pistols into Smash, put in Lara Croft before Tracer.

I mean Bayonetta says hello (though technically Japanese)
