Let’s Find Out If Halo 3 On PC Is Really As Good As They Say

Halo 3 is, supposedly, finally the experience that PC fans were hoping for from Halo. Not only does the game not sound like it’s recorded in a toilet anymore, but there’s also the fact that Halo 3 is still the best game in the series.

Supposedly. Well, we’ll find out today.

Leah and I will be playing through the Halo 3 campaign in co-op — over Steam, of course — on the Kotaku Australia Twitch stream today. Last week we had a great time unpacking the mind-bending world of perspective puzzler Superliminal. But it’s been a loooooooong week, and when you have weeks like that, sometimes you just need to shoot something up. (Update: Stream’s over, but you can catch back up below!)

We’ll be playing from 1.45pm-2.45pm AEST. It’s a little bit earlier than usual just because of some other things we have to cover later this afternoon — which I wish I could talk about but I can’t but it’s exciting stuff OK.

If you haven’t given our Twitch channel a follow, please do! And come hang out in our official Discord server as well, which you can join below. Leah and I are in there all the time, so you can ask questions directly, hang out, talk to other chill folk and ask us about what we’re working on, or what we think about what’s happening in the gaming world. (Please don’t try and ping me at 1:00am though. We need sleep too!)

See you soon!

  • I found the multiplayer to be quite underwhelming for halo 3.

Apparently the campaign for Reach is the best in the series.

I have been playing the reach campaign and couldnt find any real graphical difference between it and halo 3 multiplayer, havent tried the campaign for 3 yet though.

I recall halo on PC being alot better than these new versions, perhaps its the rosy tint of nostalgia.

    • Sounds like you are playing them for the first time?
I could kinda understand it feeling underwhelming tbh, even though halo is my second favourite game franchise (to mass effect). In a way i feel like they are something you needed to have played at the time to still feel great going and playing them, not necessarily in a nostalgia way, but more like already being used to how different it is to modern games.

Its very different to modern/contemporary shooters. Most of those feel much faster, while Halo 3 is kinda slow. But it makes up for that by you being able to shoot at all times while running/jumping around (think how often one dies while sprinting/jumping/climbing at the wrong time in COD, that can’t happen in halo).

As for graphics, they didn’t do any sort of remaster for Halo 3 or Reach so yeah they are still just xbox 360 games playing at higher resolution. Not gonna be too much to notice on that front.

    • For my money Reach was the worst game in the series. It’s the only one I never finished the campaign for (never played 5).

  • I didn’t like 3 at all, multiplayer or campaign. If it’s on Xbox game pass for PC I’ll give it another go.

  • So, is it as good as they say?
Personally I struggle with the controls a bit. I just can’t seem to land headshots like I used to back in the 360 days.
    Still great fun though.

  • Halo 3 is my second least-favourite Halo entry, still a good game objectively but I was disappointed compared to the utterly fantastic Halo CE & Halo 2. In fact I just played Halo 2 Anniversary for the first time a few weeks ago on PC and it was a fantastic experience being able to use the kb/m in Halo.
