Open-World Harry Potter Game Hogwarts Legacy Revealed
Oh hey, that's a fantastic beast. (Screenshot: WB Games)

Remember back in October of 2018 when a leaked video seemed to show off an open-world Harry Potter game? During today’s PlayStation 5 event, WB Games announced Hogwarts Legacy, an open-world action RPG set in the 1800s Potterverse, coming to PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Series X, and PC in 2021.

Explore magical locations, encounter magical enemies, learn magical spells, and magically attempt to overcome the dirty feeling of playing a game associated with noted transphobe JK Rowling. Developed by WB studio Avalanche Software, some members of which may have recently voiced their displeasure with the Harry Potter author, Hogwarts Legacy sees young, fresh wizards becoming older, more seasoned wizards. Since it is set in the 1800s, I am hopeful the game will allow players to use the floor as a bathroom and then wizard it away.

Here’s the trailer.

It looks like it could be a lot of fun. I worry about JK Rowling’s … well, I almost wrote “JK Rowling’s taint.” That would have been bad.

Comments

  • Really appreciate the mention of JK’s transphobia, a lot of publications will remain dead silent on that while hyping the game. I personally won’t be buying it even though it looks like a lot of fun. I just can’t morally spend my time and money on something associated with such an awful person.

  • She’s a transphobe? How so? What does it have to do with the game?

I actually think this looks a pretty decent game even though I was done with the HP series about 18 years ago. This was the type of game I wanted back then, so I’ll be happy to see if they nailed it now.

    • While I personally think she probably is one, I don’t think that’s for me to say as a cis guy – but she’s expressed support for transphobic theories, written books that could be perceived as transphobic and expressly said that she feels cis women are being treated worse today than ever before (with the implication that trans women aren’t being treated as badly and that they are a part of the reason women are treated badly today).

Add on to that her history with declaring in tweets Dumbledore to be gay, but then subsequently refusing to depict him as such beyond minor hints in the prequel movies she wrote and a bunch of embarrasingly bad takes on a whole host of issues that don’t affect her as one of the wealthiest people in the world and it’s easy to see why people have issues with her. Even if she wasn’t transphobic she’s amassed a lot of frustration from marginalised groups that previously saw themselves in her work.

As for what it has to do with the game – it is still a universe she created. I would hope the game might go in quite a different direction and do their own thing with the property, but I would understand why people might feel differently about the property now than they did before. I’m not fussed, and I imagine most people wouldn’t care either, but her comments hurt a lot of people and if those people did feel strange about the property now I get it.

For me even though I never really liked the series if there’s a decent character creator and some kind of Fire Emblem: Three Houses type of friend / relationship system I’m in. School settings offer so many interesting possiblities that most games just don’t touch, and after Three Houses I’ve been hoping to play something similar.

      • Three Houses was the first FE to really click for me, and I put it down to how they structured the Houses and the time-skip, and the fact that it was basically JRPG-interpreted-medieval Hogwarts.

        • Three Houses was amazing. I think it’s on par with Awakening for me, but I don’t know if I could go back to Awakening after Three Houses which was techniacally a much better game.

Fates I found a bit dissappointing, especially split as it was into 2 games and I haven’t played any of the others, but gee I loved Three Houses and Awakening.

        • I agree, and that’s exactly how I interpret her transphobia – but still, I just don’t think it’s my place to say it all the same.

    • Are you really so mentally challenged that you need it explained to you? Well, either that or you’re just a pathetic trans/homophobe yourself.

      • Lol… while raising the flag for trans and gays.. you throw out an ableist comment.

Typical of people like you. Bang on about someone saying “mean” things about certain group of people.. but totally ignoring your own prejudices, while claiming some form of moral high ground.

And really, if you need that explained to you, then you just hate neuro-divergent people and are an ableist

        • i personally never understood why 99.999% of the population should pander to the 0.001%. especially when it means giving in to their delusions. sure, if you think youre a female when youre a male, have fun, just stfu about it. the rest of us dont have to play along with your delusions.

          • It doesn’t take any effort to call someone by their preferred pronouns, but it can ruin you day if someone doesn’t do the same to you. You aren’t ‘pandering’ you’re just being a decent human being.

Leaving aside the ‘female when you’re a male’ and ‘delusions’ garbage, your ‘just stfu about it’ sounds exactly like the ‘I’m fine with the gays, but do they have to be so in my face about it’ lines that homophobic octogenarians spout when they see two men kissing. But then again maybe you agree with that crap. ‘You can exist, just not around me’.

A trans person’s existence isn’t an afront to your autonomy, and it’s pretty sad you think it is.

  • If it’s what we think it’s going to be, I will find a way to play it without personally allowing any of my money to make it’s way to J.K. Sad that she created something so much better, intelligent, good and empathetic than herself and is now poisoning it by association.

  • Lot of pathetic people getting pissy because of someone not even involved in the project that we are aware of. every one seems to care about one person discounting the fact the game is worked on by hundreds of people and is probably crtical to them keeping their jobs. whatever JKs views there are far far more people involved here and being dismissive of the game because of some tangential involvement is petty and destructive for them.
