What The Fuck, LA Comic Con Is Going Ahead

In December 2020, the organisers of the LA Comic Con want to open the doors of the Los Angeles Convention Centre and allow thousands of people in for a nerd show. That’s in less than three months! What the hell!

Despite every other major (and minor show) across the planet deciding to simply take the year off and reconvene when there isn’t a risk of illness and death, LA Comic Con is bored of this whole thing and would like to get back to normal, regardless of whether things are actually normal or not.

“Over the past six months, we’ve been struggling with a very important question: “Should we even ATTEMPT to have L.A. Comic Con in 2020?” Chris DeMoulin, general manager of the con, told Los Angeles Daily News.

“Since March, we’ve been living in some version of a ‘Lockdown/Safer at Home’ world, trying hard to stay safe, hoping and praying for the health and safety of ourselves, our family, friends, neighbours and all of our fellow human beings. We’re wearing masks, keeping socially distant, and remaining thankful for frontline workers, hospital personnel and everyone working hard to make a difference.

“And yet, we all yearn for just a little bit of normality, to reclaim some aspects of our lives pre-COVID.”

Chris, that’s not how this works! You can’t just make like the President of the United States and yearn all this away. Covid is still infecting millions of Americans and killing thousands.

Wearing cosplay for a weekend and getting some prints signed is absolutely not worth the risk of someone getting sick (and carrying severe symptoms for potentially months, if not the rest of their lives), getting their loved ones sick, and maybe even someone dying.

For what it’s worth, the con is trying to sell this with a series of Covid-safe measures, like the fact they’ve rented the entire LA Convention Centre space instead of the regular half, are selling half the number of tickets as usual and will spread out stalls and activities.

But this is an indoor con that is still aiming to attract thousands of people, and no amount of precautions can make that sound like a safe idea, let alone a good one.

  • The US is the living embodiment of the person who refuses to stop ‘picking at it’ to the point they give themselves sepsis.

“We don’t like the ‘new normal’, so we’re going to do something that will guarantee the horrible state of things gets worse and makes the pandemic last longer!”

Pack of selfish, callous, petulant morons. The only answer to this is to stay home. Hopefully their exhibitors aren’t similarly idiotic and there’s so little point to the con being held that they call it off anyway. (See: every convention that swore it was going ahead in March/April until all the major participants pulled out).

https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/world/corona-simulator/ – published in MARCH – has proven fucking prophetic on how transmission has worked. The ‘bouncing ball’ simulations should be mandatory reading for… frankly, fucking everyone.

    • Look at their leader. A man who doubts the existence of global warming, appoints people to positions of authority that are as evil and unscrupulous as he is, has admitted he’d bang his own daughter, blames absolutely everything on everyone else, uses racist and sexist language as if it were ok, belittles people with disabilities to get laughs, calls people in the military cowards (this from a man that’s a draft evader) and says he’s not corrupt yet pays very little tax. The list goes on.
These arseholes seeing the green stuff as a completely reasonable reason to endanger others is not surprising nor is it unexpected. If this is to be stopped don’t go. Ruin the event by not spending your money on tickets. I absolutely bet this is sold out in no time.

    • Science?!?
I’ll take the word of the completely legitimate grassroots truth seekers, that are in no way coordinated astroturfing campaigns led by corporate and political entities, over the lies of those evil “experts“ and day of the week thank you sir.

    • Not exactly the same thing.. the AFL final is happening in a state which has 5 active cases and only 50 TOTAL cases in the past 30 or do days compared to LA which recorded 500+ in the last 24 hours.

And this from someone who doesn’t even care about AFL, though many people do and find the continuance of a sport to be something exciting and positive in this ocean of diarrhea that is 2020

    • I live only a block from the Gabba. It’s going to be awful. I’m going to have to buy all my groceries and supplies a week in advance so that I can hunker down and not even make indirect contact with uber eats delivery drivers.

Even just the regular games they have on, you can see people standing on each others’ toes in groups of 50+ waiting to cross the intersection every two minutes. There’s no way anyone with the virus wouldn’t be spreading it to the rest of those groups. I’d be very surprised if anyone in that group couldn’t tell what everyone else had eaten for lunch. It’s a miracle (or deliberate bullshit) that no contract tracing has yet pointed back to one of those games.

  • The US really has trouble with reality. The way their society is goingit cant be too far off a breaking point. As a history student I always wondered how such vast empires could fall, I never thought I would have a front row seat to see for myself. One single misguided idea, after another and so on.

    • There’s no question that the US is in decline, although how many of the rest of us are likely to be taken down with them on the way remains an open question.

Certainly we’re not immune. Just look at the state of Australian politics and how much cross contamination from the US we see here such as endemic climate denialism, constant racist dog-whistling and an underclass that has been deluded into thinking that the party of big business gives a shit about their economic interests.

  • “Over the past six months, we’ve been struggling with a very important question: “Should we even ATTEMPT to have L.A. Comic Con in 2020?”

What’s to struggle with? NO. FFS NO!!

I can only assume that 200 000+ deaths has desensitised them, and they’re thinking “What’s a few more in the big scheme of things?”

  • This is a good thing. I know all you doomsayers think its gonna make the world die out, that’s fine, you can keep going. Chicken Little kept at it, and look what happened to him. The only people who took notice ate him alive. 🙂
