These PS4 Games Will Run Better On PS5 Right Now

A collective sigh of relief was had when Sony announced that its new PlayStation 5 console would be backwards compatible with PlayStation 4 games. The PS5 boasts some impressive hardware features, like an SSD that improves loading times and ray tracing for incredible visual detail. But the good news is that PS4 games can also benefit from the PS5’s upgraded features.

Many PS4 games got a nice upgrade when the PS4 Pro released with its Boost Mode feature. The PS5 is taking this one step further with its Game Boost ability, which will automatically improve loading speeds and provide better and more stable framerates.

However, the fun really begins for those PS4 games with unlocked frame rates or those that are locked at 60fps which receive even better performance on the PS5 from day one.

How to tell which games are optimised for PS5

A website known as backwards-compatible has been meticulously testing each PS4 game that is also playable on the PS5. It’s a comprehensive website and is well worth checking out if you want to dig into how your PS4 games will run on PS5

So far the site has tested 941 games and counting. You can check out in-depth info for individual games such as whether they have HDR capabilities, framerate stats and if the game will perform best on a PS5.

Searching for an individual title will also reveal stats such as the frame rate of the game on the PS4 and PS4 Pro vs the PS5 and it will alert you if the game has had any noticeable visual glitches.

You can also filter your search for specific resolutions or framerates. As ResetEra explains, locked 60fps is the standard to strive for. So, the games tagged with this feature will look their best on the PS5.

You can find a full list of PS4 games locked at 60fps on the PS5 here.

A great list, compiled on ResetEra, has tested each backwards compatible PS4 game and logged its performance.

As the article explains, games that don’t hit their target framerates on PS4 will be automatically improved on PS5. So even if they can’t consistently achieve a locked framerate of 60fps, the PS5 can still help them to look their best.

The games above were patched for the PS4 Pro with unlocked frame rates, but despite targeting 60fps many games fell well short of that target — or frequently suffered from stuttering, jitters and general instability trying to get there. With the PS5’s additional power, these games no have no problem maintaining a much smoother frame rate, leading to a vastly better experience.

These lists will probably grow in the coming months so don’t stress if you’re favourite game isn’t up there. Many PS4 games have already received, or are in the process of receiving, PS5 optimised patches.  The Last of Us Remastered and God of War recently got such patches and have been all the better for it, so keep an eye on your console’s update list.
