I asked this same question last year and looking back on the list of games I hoped to finish, I actually am surprised I got to quite a few of them. That includes Deadly Premonition, Radiant Historia, Pikmin 3, Link Between Worlds, Trace Memory, and No More Heroes. The link between them all is that they were available on the Switch or DS and I could play them late at night after everyone had gone to sleep as I’ve had almost no free time during the day.

This year, my backlog has gotten even worse and I haven’t even picked up the new generation of consoles. Motivated by a sense of helplessness due to the circumstances of this year, I ended up buying a whole lot of DS/3DS games on EBay. This includes Kid Icarus Uprising, Dragon Quest IX, Shovel Knight, Lunar Knights, Mario and Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, and more. My list of Switch games I need to get to feels overwhelming as well, with the latest Fire Emblem being at the top of the list, followed by Astral Chain, Octopath Traveller, Worldend Syndrome, and Luigi’s Mansion 3. I didn’t make much progress with my PS4 backlog this year, but I did pick up a whole lot of new games like Resident Evil 3 and the Final Fantasy VII Remake. There are the games that I started, really enjoyed, but had to put on hold for lack of time: Mega Man Legends, Legend of Kage 2, and Shining Force II (which is on my Genesis collection for the Switch). There’s also a lot of classic NES, SNES, and Genesis games I try to revisit, if only to re-experience them again. I usually do an annual play through Castlevania 2-4 and hop through my save files for Final Fantasy IV. I also picked up the DS version of Chrono Trigger since I love finding excuses to travel through time all over again.

I know having a backlog is a good problem to have. When I was a kid, my family could only rarely afford new games, so I ended up having to play my same games over and over until I’d be able to get a new game. I do believe this is where my love for RPGs was born because they gave so much bang for their buck. Nowadays though, not only are there so many amazing games, but so many of them are epic in scope with too many things to do. I have to prioritise my list and hope to get to as many as I can.

So Kotaku, the question today is, what games on your backlog do you most hope to finish in the New Year?

  • Not that im playing my backlog but its there stopping my constant need to purchase more and more and more games. I think this year, everytime i went to buy a game, it went to game pass. Two Point Hospital, Neir Automata, Doom Eternal, Fallout (there is probs heaps more) So i just gave up and got game pass lol Every year at Christmas time tho i visit friends and take my SNES mini with me. I love going back and playing Donkey Kong and Kirby and Mario Kart with friends tho! Always so much fun!

    • I cannot play Mario Kart on the SNES mini – it gives me motion sickness within a minute 🙁 I never had that issue with it on the original SNES. Maybe it’s the much bigger TV I’ve got it hooked up to now compared to back in the 1990s?

  • The “older” games that I need to finish…
    Outer Worlds (with the DLC)
    Shadow of the Tomb Raider
    Starcraft 2
    Ghost of Tsushima
    Marvel Spider-man (the first one)

the “newer” games that I would like to finish
    Watch Dogs Legion
    Immortals Fenyx Rising
    Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
    Cyberpunk 2077

as well as continuing to work on my Fallout 4 Mods

  • Death Stranding, which I just started, Judgement and Divinity Original Sin 2.

Why are all these games today so goddamn long?!

  • My top 5 backlog games are probably:

    Kentucky Route Zero
    House in Fata Morgan
    Final Fantasy VII (original)
    Parasite Eve

I’m pretty confident that If I gave myself an afternoon, I could come up with a list over 200 games long, though.

  • I have drawn up a list of 348 PS4/PS5 games that I own but have yet to either play or finish.

I will be endeavouring to give each one a fair shake of a few hours to days, and noting which ones I want to play more, which ones I want to see the end of but not enough to play them (will watch YouTube longplays or cinematics-only), and which ones I couldn’t be bothered with any more and don’t care enough to see how they shake out.

My 2021 goal is to complete the list, and purchase NO NEW GAMES until it is done.

I have done an initial review of which of them on my excitement levels to play… 25% I am excited to play, 35% I have middling interest in, and 40% I have no excitement for. This shall be an interesting experiment.

  • The biggest are definitely Witcher 3, Doom Eternal, Cyberpunk 2077 (probably later in the year), Horizon Zero Dawn, Metro Exodus and No Man’s Sky. That’s probably half the year worth right there!

  • I ended up selling Astral Chain. Played like jank and was a more garbage version of Evangelion plot wise. If people can’t finish that one, don’t worry, you’re not missing out.
