In the wake of yesterday’s violent, conspiracy-fuelled insurrection at the Capitol Building, Twitch has elected to disable Donald Trump’s Twitch account.

In an email to Kotaku, a Twitch spokesperson explained the company’s rationale.

“In light of yesterday’s shocking attack on the Capitol, we have disabled President Trump’s Twitch channel,” the spokesperson wrote. “Given the current extraordinary circumstances and the President’s incendiary rhetoric, we believe this is a necessary step to protect our community and prevent Twitch from being used to incite further violence.”

For now, the suspension is indefinite. “We are focused on minimising harm leading up to the transition of government and will reassess his account after he leaves office,” the spokesperson said.

This follows a similar decision from Facebook, which earlier today banned the reality show host turned insurrection-inciting United States president until “at least” the end of his term later this month. Twitter, meanwhile, has locked Trump’s account for a shorter period of time, as has Snapchat.

    Beautiful

    • fun fact he actually has one, but it hasnt been used since april 2017. was talking a to guild mate over in the states about the extended season finale of america

  • What will the journalists talk about in a couple of weeks? The orange man they all fear greatly will be gone and the democrats control both houses. They won’t be able to blame orange man anymore or the republicans.

    This is gonna be interesting.

  • Kinda disturbing that tech companies can effectively gag a democratically elected leader. Yes he has other ways of communicating, but none are as wide reaching as social media.

Obviously it’s his own doing for saying such stupid shit – but it does demonstrate just how much power and control we’ve handed over to social media/tech firms.

    • Well we already knew social media had too much power when a failed businessman accidentally created an entire MAGA cult.
