The newest World of Warcraft update reduces the amount of titty that can be seen in the game. Unfortunately, no restitution for its gender-marginalised developers is in sight.

As spotted by WowHead user Archimtiros, the latest 9.1.5 patch for World of Warcraft updates some in-game paintings of women to be less revealing, while others have been removed altogether. A robed woman’s image in Stormwind has been altered to cover more of her breasts, and a scantily clad reclining woman in Ravenholdt has met the strange fate of becoming a bowl of fruit.

While no direct correlation is apparent, the patch’s timing notably coincides with the fact that Activision Blizzard is currently being sued by the state of California for gender discrimination and abuse against its female employees.

The lawsuit details accounts of sexual harassment, retaliation, gender pay disparity, and racial discrimination at Activision Blizzard. The suit aims to make the company comply with workplace laws, and to address wages lost by some employees due to gender discrimination.

However, by some accounts Activision Blizzard shows no signs of addressing the issues at the heart of California’s claims. Just this week, the employee advocacy group ABetterABK filed its own lawsuit against Activision Blizzard for coercing organisers, hiring union busting firms, and surveilling workers over legally protected labour activities. So while Activision Blizzard is being sued for discrimination, employees allege that the company has responded by punishing those who are fighting for better treatment.

These painting updates follow changes to other sexual references in World of Warcraft and other Blizzard properties. Overwatch’s McCree is also being renamed so that he no longer shares a name with a Blizzard designer who hung out in the so-called Cosby Suite, a location that has become closely associated with the “frat boy culture” described in California’s lawsuit. Unfortunately, no matter how thoroughly the company tries to scrub its image, its union busting indicates that it has no intention of treating real women with respect.

  • And thus the untold countless women who produce artwork of the female body find themselves discriminated against as the female form is erased from artwork in WoW. Sex discrimination strikes again!

    • Source? Because, while I am sure many women created such art, this reads like you outlining what you believe is true, without proof that their art and voice is being removed. Indeed the art still exists, the pride in their work exists and all the work that went into still exists, just the pieces are no longer deemed tasteful or interesting, a decade or two later. So they being replaced with someone more fitting to contemporary tastes. ALL artists face that.

      • ” So they being replaced with someone more fitting to contemporary tastes. ”

If that’s true why are people fleeing to FFXIV. A game full of cleavage and has both a strong female fanbase and a strong LGBTIQ fanbase.

Replace the word “Contemporary” with “Puritan” and you’ll have a more accurate statement.

        • What on earth are you talking about? Society changes, every generation, things go into favour and things move out of favour. Just cos you need your fantasy women to wear sculpted breast plate, even if it makes no sense, that doesn’t mean those who would rather see women wearing practical armour are puritans. It just means they have different tastes for art. People are fleeing to FfXIV cos gamers are bloody sheep, it’s the cool kid at the moment, and they think by doing it they are sticking it to blizzard.

          • ” People are fleeing to FfXIV cos gamers are bloody sheep, it’s the cool kid at the moment, and they think by doing it they are sticking it to blizzard. ”

Right… Its not at all possible that FFXIV is the better game and treats its customers better and doesn’t have devs that attack the fanbase. Might want to see a doctor with that amount of Copium you are consuming.

” What on earth are you talking about? Society changes, every generation, things go into favour and things move out of favour. Just cos you need your fantasy women to wear sculpted breast plate, even if it makes no sense, that doesn’t mean those who would rather see women wearing practical armour are puritans. ”

Those who dont like the revealing armour can just not use the revealing armor. Its not that hard. It is quite literaly puritanical. At this point you are no different to the Taliban wanting to cover women head to toe.

Has it ever popped into your mind that women might also find that attire attractive? They are just boobs Blake, You dont need to be afraid of them.

      • Hmmmm.. meanwhile many a naked classical male n female statues and paintings are being exhibited in very a many art galleries.

You dont modernise “art” to make it palatable to modern tastes. One of the extrinsic features of Art is that exists as a snapshot of when it was made to show the good with the bad.

What you can do is sanitise commercial entertainment works such as movies, tv and games. I am however of the opinion thats usually counter-productive completely removing anything “wrong” at best is just censorship and at worst completely denying anything has gone “wrong” the human race has very short memories and without constant reminders of what is “wrong” we can very easily delude ourself change wasn’t necessary… then again thats just my personal opinion on this.

        • It’s not censorship. Good grief some people seriously do love good outrage.

I agree with what you wrote about art and it doesn’t dismiss what I said, art is a reflection of the time, and the time for metal bikinis was 1981.

I have been watching Morse lately and my god has it aged badly, the level of misogyny even by standards of it day, are extreme. As that type of art of fixed, nothing can be (or should be done) to fix those snap points in time, other than in their prequel show highlight the morality of that time and tell the stories that explores that history. Games are living breathing things, they have a chance to redress concerns and reflect the now, as time goes on. There is no reason why WoW needs to stay antiquated if they have a chance to reflect NEW artists and new versions of design that better reflect the mood of their audiences. Their fans who where tweens back then, are now grown adults, with far different motivations, desires and tastes.

          • Just to clarify I was hopefully not trying giving a blanket statement here that changes/localisation is “censorship”. Any changes to a commercial product to make it palatable to current audiences is the perogative of the producer/maker. I just felt like replying because “fixing art” is in such a completely different realm than commercial products like certain movies and games that you were kinda making a false equivalency of “Artists get their art changed with the times” when a lot of stuff considered Art is timeless. Heck even the controversial lyrics from early 90’s rap/hip hop whilst having a santised “radio edit” still has original unchanged recordings.

I’m basically just saying the act of blanket removing things that’s wrong is IMHO can be rather negative. You need to have reminders of what we have done wrong so we don’t easily repeat them. Hell we already have proof of some of the worst things in modern history and you will still have people delude themselves they were irrelevant or never happened.

I personally feel (blanket removal of offending material) at the very least it can “become” mild censorship because the topic is “taboo” and “we don’t talk about that here” and at worst leads to people believing there was never a problem.

I would much rather the offending material is there so that it actually sparks some discussion so we change moving forward then completely working backwards all the time and then “fixing” the “next” problem again.

Again that’s just *my* personal take on this. Take it with a grain of salt and all that jazz. Cheers for the civil discussion!

      • False dichotomy.
SJWs are easily triggered. Absolute fact.
But RWNJs are also easily triggered.
Both camps will flip their shit on a hair trigger, why pretend it’s only one or the other?

        • Because one side more than the other, claim their thoughts are always right and refuse admit their own failings. When was the last time someone on the right has ever admitted they they get triggered? Triggered is APPARENTLY only a lefties thing 😉

      • they are just boobs pokedad, You dont need to be afraid of them. FFXIV has plenty of it and seems to be doing quite well. Think hard on that.

        • Who says I’m afraid of them?
Blizzard are performing and empty gesture so they can pretend they give a fuck about fixing their deeply ingrained problems. That’s my issue. But the gamergate boys are out in force because low res pics of girls in bikinis are freedom or some shit.

  • Why is every outlet glossing over the racism that was widely complained about by the Blizzard employees? Their shit behaviour towards their employees extended well beyond sexist behaviour towards female staff, straight to racist stereotyping and bullying of non-white workers.

    • I wouldn’t say glossing over, but its not the loudest and most disturbing complaint in the room. Predatory behaviour of its senior executives is ultimately easier to prove, and is the sole reason most of those senior executives have been dismissed. Its the coffin the government case will bury them in.

Discrimination in corporate America is hard to prove, unless you have an executive dumb enough to have left a record that they choose one person over another based on race, age, disability.

      • It’s still a complaint Blizzard is yet to address and which the media is largely ignoring. It doesn’t need to be loud or disturbing in some sort of pissing contest with sexual harassment for it to be addressed by the media or Blizzard. We know for a fact that the people involved in the racism accusations haven’t had anything happen to them (like the female head of the Vault and the senior staff responsible for that area and in HR). The government isn’t a requirement for for the media to discuss the allegations, and I doubt they’re mere rumours with the amount of people who witnessed it happening.

  • More disgusting hypocritical crap from Kotaku. The human chest is not nudity, treating male and female chests (which are identical, both have nipples, both can lactate, both can have fat deposits making them larger) differently is sexism, and nudity itself is not inherently sexual in the first place. Remind me how many shirtless men remain in the game? This is a loss for equality and a step backwards.

    • Did you read the article? Nah of course you didnt, because if you did you would have realised this staffer was not making or taking a stance of the issue on the ‘human chest’, merely outlining what WAS happening and a little dig about them not focusing on the real issue of sexism.

So they literally arent doing what you are damning them for doing, not even close. its like you read the headline, and immediately engaged your outrage at Kotaku chip.

  • “Hey guys, We turned the sexy wamen into a fruit bowl, Please buy our products again please!”

I love the fact some online are defending this saying the images made women uncomfortable, While ignoring FFXIV which is full of titty and is widely played and enjoyed by women.

These actions censoring stuff ingame is nothing but tokenism to get gullible morons who usually fall for this shit to play the game again. If you think these actions are good you are being played, you are gullible.

  • I am not surprised, I speculated that Blizzard would be basically going through the game looking at artwork and room layouts to make sure one of their designers were not insane enough to include an actual Cosby Suite easter egg in the game.
