Oregon Trail Live, the real-world competition based on the Oregon Trail PC game, kicked off with the startling crack of a bullwhip in Salem, Oregon this past Saturday, sending "wagon trains" "westward" from "Independence, Mo." (a.k.a. the check-in area) to complete ten OT-derived challenges en route to Oregon's Willamette Valley (a.k.a. where we were all actually playing).
"WHY DO I ALWAYS GET THESE ****ING TEAMS," our Jungler rages not, even three minutes into our League of Legends match. "****ing stupid you just lost lane and top is going to feed." The game is hardly over. We're just in a small hole, but the Summoner playing Lee Sin has already written this match off as a loss. Just a few seconds later they start again, "Top and mid already lost, my red got stolen, yeah im done."
A competition in Salem, Oregon, later this Saturday will give folks nostalgic for The Oregon Trail -- i.e. everyone who had access to a PC in the '80s and '90s -- the chance to relive the classic game in all its pixellated, dysentery'd splendor.
The mission seems to be going well enough; it's been tough, but you've persevered, making your way through some tense situations by avoiding the gaze of patrolling guards. You've just infiltrated the enemy base -- now it's time to assassinate someone. You're hiding, maybe in the bushes or around a corner, and wham, some guard spots you. Alarms sound, the world begins to move in slow motion, and an alert pops up on screen.
