Last night, two of Australia's best CSGO teams fought for the right to represent Australia globally in the International eSports Federation. Athletico won two straight games to steal the spotlight in a joint broadcast between SBS 2 and Twitch, in what amounts to the first competitive Counter-Strike match on free-to-air TV.


You don't hear about it a great deal, but the International e-Sports Federation (IeSF) is one of the few international bodies in esports that has a footprint in Australia. It's been around for a few years, but there's hope that it might get a whole lot bigger thanks to a massive investment from the Chinese conglomerate Alibaba.


Women aren't allowed to play Hearthstone in one upcoming multi-national tournament, and the gender discrimination has triggered a great deal of controversy this morning. This is unusual for a number of reasons: most major video game tournaments are open to players of any gender, and there is nothing about games like Hearthstone that would indicate that men and women play at different levels, as they might in physical sports like football and basketball.
