The Splatfest festivities are over and the results are in: mayo may have lost the popular vote, but it still managed to take home the prize. And yet, many salty ketchup players are calling shenanigans.
This is a good chunk of the Splatoon fandom right now:

Splatfest, as many of you know, is an event where players pick a side between two things. From there, players go out into the battlefield, repping their desired vote, and try to win matches for their team. The side with the most votes and win percentages is declared the victor.
You’ll note that ketchup (73%) kicked mayo’s arse (27%) when it came to votes. Not surprising, really, when you consider that Marina the Octoling was on team ketchup, and everyone loves Marina. The thing is, Marina was so popular that many ketchup players just ended up facing themselves. There were literally not enough mayo players to go around. I participated in Splatfest all day yesterday, and barely ever got into matches against mayo. Instead, I’d estimate that 85% of my matches were against fellow ketchup-ers.
The question is, how does Splatoon 2 take that reality into account? Do the ketchup vs ketchup matches not count toward wins? Do they “count” in a way that cancels itself out, with every match acting as win and a lose at once? Is the game doing some other behind-the-scenes calculus that we’re not privy to? Nintendo did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Whatever the case, all possibilities are kinda a bummer, even if all of this is in good fun. If you’re on the overwhelmingly popular team, you could have spent all day winning but not actually contributing to your team. Then again, how fair would it be to count same-team matches? Underdogs would never have a chance.
And so, now that the official Nintendo account has called the mayo vs ketchup Splatfest, its Twitter mentions are full of people demanding answers, or at least venting about how unfair the whole thing seems:
For veteran Splatoon players, the results of the latest Splatfest are probably not surprising: unpopular items have a history winning more matches. So next time around, if you really want to be on the winning team by the end, maybe you should go with the side nobody is voting for instead. Sorry, Marina.

Team Mayo here. The results themselves are indicative of a reasonably fair system if only the mayo v ketchup counted to the result. Now granted we don’t know the math but as it has been said, it would be fairly odd if the K v K matches counted. Also I had a not zero amount of M v M matches.
Looks like they have changed up the scoring, interesting.
I don’t know why people cannot understand it, if you play you own team it doesn’t count anything. I played a few ketchup battles, one in particular was just brutal, like a pro team who were all communicating. I think I won about 2/3rds of the battles against mayo. Good fun in all. They should run a few extra hours though.
People are too stupid. Do you just want to sit in a lobby for 20min between each match or be forced to choose a side you don’t like?
Besides, playing against your own team still nets you personal rewards. It still counts towards your rank.
They adjusted the scoring system during the lifespan of the first game, so we can expect tweaks here too.
Also, go team mayo!
So what will happen next is that the popular team will start playing ‘for the other side’ and throwing matches, spitefully hoping to help their team that way.
Lol. The amount of stupid petty people to try that will not affect anything.
The main problem is 90% of team ketchup was only their for marina alone not because they like ketchup more then mayo thats the problem not servers, lesson of the day kiddos chose your team based on the subject and the one representing not just the latter.
Or not hell if you only sided with ketchup because of marina then thats on you not the game.
You’re totally right, but I would argue that picking a team just because you like the mascot isn’t any sillier than picking the team because you like the condiment. You argument makes sense in the logic of the game but it’s also a completely ridiculous discussion viewed outside of that.
I would say that a majority went ketchup because it is far superior to mayo
This is exactly the same as Ice Cream v Cake, the only difference is that the popular team is now the salty one, and obviously has more people.
73% of the players are now salty, so their voice will be much louder than the 15% that lost the last Splatfest as the minority team.
System is fine. Popularity gives people a huge advantage, yet they still lost. It definitely sucks to not have your matches counted, but it’s more fair.
The Ketchup saltiness is ridiculous. Everything goes by way too fast for me to note down and track anything like I did in the previous game, but I was still having a ridiculous number of mayo-mayo matches as well. Most importantly I kicked ketchup arse whenever facing them 😎
Made the top 100! \o/
(could have placed higher if I didn’t stay up so late and concede so many losses with absolute potato team mates and tank my rating though >.<)
Kotaku Can we just stop with those offensive foul language tweets on Twitter please? Mayonnaise may have beaten Tomato Sauce in Splatoon 2 but I have no idea why people are so angry about why their team Tomato Ketchup lost to team Mayonnaise those people should stop sending those offensive tweets to Nintendo of America into thinking that Splatoon 2 is a crappy game OK let’s just forget about the Mayonnaise victory over Tomato Ketchup in Splatoon 2 and move on to something else
It don’t understand how people aren’t getting why this happened. If you’ve got 100 players searching for a game and it’s split 4 mayo:96 ketchup, of course you’re gonna have a hard time finding mayo players. It’s not an issue with the matchmaking, it’s an issue with numbers and probability.
Don’t understand the salt. If Ketchup VS Ketchup matches did not count, it means that the Ketchup VS Mayo were won mostly by Mayo. I don’t see why they expected that popularity numbers should count. If the better players chose more consistently Mayo, then Mayo is the winner, period.
I joined Ketchup for two reasons, neither of them were because of marina (Who I do prefer to pearl but I really don’t care too much about). One, because I actually prefer ketchup to mayo, two because my friends irl joined it. I don’t care that ketchup lost, I won about 50/50 of the games against mayo and I expected that it would be close for the solo and team categories. I don’t know what ketchup wants to happen, because it could potentially become bad for pearl’s side.
