Sean Bean is not the star of Civilization 6. But he is one of the highlights.
The role of Civilization tech narrator is a famous one! Leonard Nimoy, for example, was incredible in the job, turning a dull series of quotes into a real treat every time you made a little advance in Civilization 6.
Bean, who voices Civ 6’s collection of famous sayings from history, academia and… elsewhere does just as good a job. Below you’ll find a few examples.
Also, shout out to the game’s other voice acting star, British actress Natasha Loring, who does a fantastic job as your advisor.
As for my thoughts on the rest of the game, our review is in progress and should be up by the end of the week.

Some of the most flat, bored voice-over I’ve heard in years.
Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. -Sputnik
Dude, there’s a line from fucking Monty Python in there and he even deadpans that, delivering it completely flat. It’s a tragedy.
You didn’t play Destiny at launch?
I liked Dinklebot a lot actually. Much better than Nolanbot.
Yeah I liked it too, you could hear his frustration from what we can only assume was a compete lack of direction.
My fav was the infamous wizard from the moon, line.
You can almost hear him looking up for a little context.
If you get to the end of the tech tree Sean Bean dies.
OMG SPOILERS!?!?!1?!?!?
Sean Bean dying isn’t a spoiler, it’s a feature.
Its his special unit
Depends… if the unit is “Sharpe’s Rifles” then he’d be pratically immortal…. :p
Are you aware of the official Sean Bean rules hack for Goblin Quest?
He shouldn’t make it through the tutorial…
You could argue that he didn’t make it through the opening cutscene…
Rather enjoying Civ VI so far, feels like an improvement over Civ V in most areas. Only thing I’m not a huge fan of atm is how diplomacy with other civs works, seems like 90% hate me just for not being them…
Also a bunch of options from the old games missing (like an Earth map, disabling City-states, random personalities, etc) and the big one, Diplomatic Victory. Guessing the first expansion will be based on Diplomacy/UN stuff but hopefully some mods can add in some of that before then.
This. I wish someone could make the next great step and actually code GOOD AI. So many games that are sequels of sequels (Civ series and Total War as two examples), the AI is still just so rubbish, the same as it was 15-20 years ago.
Back then I could forgive it as it was a new genre and low power PC’s, but seriously there feels like there has been zero improvement in AI in that regard at all.
I really am looking forward to a real step forward in AI, to me it seriously feels like the AI has gone no-where for years, the AI in the latest Civ in 2016 feels really no different to the first Civ in 1991 (25 freaking years ago).
Still completely brain dead stupid, declaring war for no reason, sueing for peace next turn, not understanding its own money systems and being constantly bankrupt, not understanding its own map and military units (what, your charging my city again with your siege stuff all alone, yep good idea, again), and on and on.
In fact in some ways you could argue it has gotten worst, as the systems have become more complicated/intertwined and the AI just hasn’t improved at all.
tl;dr, good looking game and the systems work really well for humans, but dammit when are we going to see some REAL AI improvements, instead of things like harder difficulty just gives the AI stat/money/happy boosts, but having them play just the same stupidly braindead way as the last 20 years.
Yeah, the AI definitely needs some work in diplomacy. I keep finding myself in situations where I know both agendas, the overwhelming majority of the specific attitude modifiers are positive, but they’re still unfriendly to me and won’t take any deals that aren’t massively one-sided in their favour. I’ve also seen some really weird stuff with the combat AI. But I bet both of those things will be tweaked in patches over the next couple months.
The removal of the World Congress and Diplomatic Victory is a shame, especially considering how much they expanded on city-states and how much better/more transparent diplomacy has the potential to be once the AI is ironed a little.
However, it’s still much more complete than Civ V was at launch and has nearly every feature from Civ V’s expansion packs as well… nearly every aspect of the game has been improved or expanded on in some way. If it improves with expansions as much as Civ V did then in 2-3 years it might easily be the best game in the series.
I really don’t understand why this is still such an issue for them. There are plenty of cases where the AI should capitulate because it’s entirely hopeless, but they keep fighting on to the bitter end. I’ve had plenty of campaigns bog down because I’m swatting away annoying little empires that can’t possibly win and yet declared war on me for arbitrary reasons. There’s no enjoyment or purpose to fighting them and they have no sense of self-preservation.
That actually seems like a pretty good simulation of the real world.
Diplomacy is fine, it’s definitely better than civ 5’s. You have to remember that you’re not being buddy-buddy with a person, but rather a whole civilisation, so if your political system is different to theirs, of course they won’t like it — much like real life. At least now they let you know why you’re being denounced and what is affecting your relationship.
I don’t really think “Norway declares war on me every 50 turns, their army is a joke so I take one of their cities and then return it in the peace deal in exchange for all their money, all their income, all their resources and all their great works. 50 turns later they declare war again. This has happened 4 times now.” is the AI being fine.
Not to mention “We have the highest level of intel possible about this nation. As far as we know, they love everything about us. However they’re unfriendly towards us to the point where war could break out at any time, won’t accept an embassy, and will not accept any deal unless we give them 50 times what they give us.”
Or “Some people who you encountered a scout of once on the other side of the continent have declared war!” 20 turns later “Hey sorry for the war thing, we know we didn’t ever send any troops or anything like that but here’s all my money to stop the war again now.”
This is all playing on the higher difficulties as well.
The diplomacy has lots of nice new features compared to Civ V that could add a lot of nuance, but my experience has been that right now the actual AI is a joke and behaves far less believably than in Civ V.
Please fix Mr Editor:
