Even though the news cycle has moved on and shifted the focus away from Puerto Rico, the island is still struggling to recover from hurricanes Irma and Maria that ravaged the island, killed hundreds, and left over a million people without power. Though many have forgotten Puerto Rico, Lion Forge hasn’t.
Next March, indie comics publisher Lion Forge is releasing Puerto Rico Strong, an anthology of comics from Puerto Rican creators meant to showcase their relationship and cultural connection to the island. In an official statement, Lion Forge expressed a desire to remind people that as foreign a place as it may seem to some, Puerto Rico is a part of the US and fellow American citizens should be invested in the island’s recovery:
“What we hope to accomplish here is showcasing the vast diversity of Puerto Rico of our community and our history. There are those of us whose parents immigrated from the island, or who have family on the island still, or have never even seen Puerto Rico. We want to explore those stories of struggle and triumph through that lens.”
Puerto Rico Strong boasts a solid roster of talent with stories from Vita Ayala, Naomi Franquiz, Deadpool co-creator Fabian Nicieza, and many more. All profits from the anthology’s sale will be donated to humanitarian efforts throughout Puerto Rico.
