Blacksmiths Use Fire To Make ‘Ice,’ Ned Stark’s Killer Sword From Game Of Thrones

The Man at Arms crew is at it again, taking on one of the coolest (and most challenging) swords in modern-day fantasy: Ice from Game of Thrones.

Ice is one of the most iconic swords in Game of Thrones, with a legacy that spans the entire series and many of its key moments. Made of Valyrian steel, it’s the sword Eddard Stark used to kill Will, the Night’s Watch deserter, in the very first scene of the very first episode. It served as more of an executioner’s sword than a battle weapon, something the Man at Arms crafters point out in the video, given its size and use.

The only other purpose it served before being melted down was to execute Ned Stark himself — although Joffrey doesn’t do it himself because he was a snivelling little coward.

The video’s 18 minutes long, but it’s a testament to how tricky (and amazing) weapons-crafting can be. And now that the team at Baltimore Knife and Sword has made Ice, the real test is whether they could dismantle it and turn it into Oathkeeper and Widow’s Wail, the two swords Tywin Lannister ordered Ice be crafted into for Jaime Lannister and Joffrey Baratheon, respectively. (They have already made Jaime Lannister’s first sword, but not the one he later gave to Brienne of Tarth). If they were able to achieve that, it would truly be a feat for the ages.
