PlayStation Network Gets Its First Free-To-Play MMO This Month

After nearly two years in operation on the PC and Mac, Sony Online Entertainment finally brings it’s family-friendly, free-to-play massively multiplayer online game Free Realms to the PlayStation 3 on March 29, making it the first free-to-play console MMO.

A colorful clash of social gaming and massively multiplayer world, Free Realms was originally announced for the PC and PlayStation 3, but the console version was nowhere to be seen when the game launched in April of 2009. Since then Sony Online Entertainment promised information on the PlayStation 3 version of the game but never quite got around to delivering.

Now they’re delivering.

Free Realms launches on the PlayStation Network on March 29. Players simply need to download the client, create a character, and they’re on their way to a magical world filled with adventure, exploration and plenty of mini-games.

The game remains completely free-to-play on the PlayStation 3, with advanced content unlocked through a modest monthly subscription ($US5 on the PC) and new items available for purchase through microtransactions. Players will be able to use voice chat to communicate , in the likely case they don’t feel like hooking a keyboard to their PS3.

DC Universe Online proved that the PlayStation 3 could run a relatively intense MMO. Launching Free Realms should be a piece of cake.

Just be warned. The game looks adorable, but it’s ridiculously addictive once you find your stride.
