A team at the Technical University of Denmark has managed to blast 43 terabits of data down a fibre cable in a single second, setting a new world record for the fastest ever data transfer speed.
For reference, that’s 1GB of data in just 0.2 milliseconds.
These records tend to be broken every few years (the same university held the record back in 2009), but what’s promising about this one is that it uses similar technology – firing a single laser down a single fibre – to that used in fibre connections today.
Meaning that while it’s the stuff of press releases and record books now, it might only be a few years until speeds like that hit the real world.
Well. The parts of the real world with decent fibre internet infrastructure, anyway.

Read: NOT Australia
Don’t be upset, your great grand kids will get it.
Now THAT’S optimistic…
But I’m told they won’t want it. The internet is a passing fad. They’ll be too busy living the high life thanks to all that big money coming in from the automotive industry to worry about stupid little things like the internet.
The automotive industry that just abandoned Australia? I think you mean the big money coming in from coal! Coal… the way of the future!
So Australia will get this in the next millennium?
Nice, I’ll have two.
And to think I found the thought of 25+mbps speed salivating.
This is under ideal conditions, with fibre far superior to what can be found in widespread usage, using endpoint hardware that’s far beyond the capabilities of anything in general service. But that’s largely irrelevant, since the significance of this is that fibre tech is only getting better and cheaper, unlike copper which has reached its limits. Eventually these developments will work their way to the consumer level, while copper will not be any better than it is already.
But guys, you don’t need more than 25Mbps. We the politicians know what’s best for you. Your current internet speed is enough. If you are stuck in some remote corner with 1.5Mbps, well life is tough.
Oh btw, be mindful not to download anything since we encourage copyright holders to charge you 25%-50% more than anyone else in the world, and geolock is the best, our buddy Rubert says so.
….i dont even get 1.5mb/s in my town…. hate life…
Well in 20 years time All Australian business will be left in the shadows..
25 megabits would be excellent for me, but sadly is a pipe dream thanks to my options being limited to the slow, low quotaed Telstra 3G
At least you can look down on people with Satellite, My grandma is stuck on 512k/256k with 500mb of quota and a ping of 1000.
lol u guys mad i already have NBN?
100/40
Australia will never see good internet with liberals in power
