It’s been nearly a decade since Nintendo released Mother 3 in Japan, and since then, we haven’t heard a word about an official English release. Until now.
Ten years later, rumours are coming hot and heavy that Nintendo finally plans to release their iconic RPG in Europe and North America. Habitual Nintendo teaser Emily Rogers — whose rumours are sometimes right and sometimes not-so-right — got the ball rolling with some tweets about Mother 3 last night, and was soon joined by a host of other rumour-mongers including Unseen64’s Liam Robertson. (His track record is also spotty.)
We wouldn’t report on these sorts of Twitter rumblings if there was no additional confirmation, but the reliable British outlet Eurogamer is reporting that they have independently heard the same thing. As the cliché goes: when there’s smoke, there’s Mother 3.
The Mother series has a long and tangled history in the West, but has seen some of a resurgence in recent years. In 2013, Nintendo released Mother 2 AKA Earthbound on the Wii U’s Virtual Console, and in the winter of 2015 they surprised everyone with the Western debut of Mother 1, AKA Earthbound Beginnings. Nintendo had already translated both of those games into English, however; the only English version of Mother 3 is a stellar fan-translation patch spearheaded by Clyde “Mato” Mandelin and released in 2008. If Mother 3 were to come out in the West, Nintendo would either have to start from scratch or use Mandelin’s script, which he has offered to them for free.
If this does actually happen, I can only assume it’s because I wrote this article.

I don’t want to get my hopes up, so I won’t.
But I have.
This article is unfortunate.
I usually like Schreier’s stuff and I am sure he’s never going to actually see this or lose any sleep over whether I praise or pot him for the above.
However, he has thrown Rogers to the wolves before:
http://www.kotaku.com.au/2012/11/first-came-the-interview-for-this-unusual-wii-u-indie-game-then-came-the-drama/
That’s a particularly old article, essentially about a Kickstarter game.
But this is what happened after:
A woman’s piece on what was a ‘fan site’ (NotEnoughShaders seems to be defunct now, as a matter of fact), not to mention her personal tweets, were used as an excuse for a writer in games media to sic a crowd of forum members and anybody with an anonymous social media account on to her.
At the time – and you probably can see this via the NeoGAF thread – all manner of disgusting bile was piled on to this woman for simply talking about video games.
She had to nuke her twitter account, and she quit games writing due to the amount of abuse.
The same thing has happened this week.
It seems like Rogers reap what she sow. You can’t go talking shit about other company publicly on a major social network and just deletes it and act nothing happened.
