In an email sent to all users, the daily fantasy gambling site Alphadraft has announced it will cease operations on October 21.
Alphadraft gained a large amount of traction and fan recognition over the last few years as a prominent sponsor in esports, as well as providing fans and spectators a place to wager on a variety of matches for Counter-Strike, Dota 2, League of Legends, StarCraft and other games.
One of the more notable teams they sponsored was Renegades, the multi-gaming US organisation who recruited five Australians for their Counter-Strike roster a couple of years ago. The team was recently purchased by Boston Celtics forward Jonas Jerebko, and the team’s Australian CS:GO roster has remained largely intact over the last year.
“As we continue to evaluate the eSports landscape,” the email says, “we are announcing today that we have made the difficult decision to stop offering fantasy eSports contests on AlphaDraft as of Friday, October 21, at the conclusion of the League of Legends World Championship. You can continue to play contests until this time.”
Users can withdraw their funds at any point, although if you’re a regular you’ll probably want to do it immediately.
2016 has been a fairly rocky year for daily fantasy sports (DFS), with five American states banning the practice outright and legislation in overs to have it regulated under the same terms as gambling.
