BioWare’s Five Fingers Of Death

Something spectacular, something amazing almost came from the house that built Mass Effect, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire. And it involved old black and white kung fu movies.

Speaking on the opening panel for the Design Innovate Create Entertainment summit in Las Vegas last week, BioWare co-founder Dr. Greg Zeschuk was asked what the funniest thing he ever did as a designer was.

“Ten to 12 years ago I designed a game called The Five Fingers of Death,” he told moderator Seth Schiesel, of the New York Times. “It was a kung fu game set in the Baldur’s Gate universe.”

The notion of a martial arts game built with the Baldur’s Gate engine isn’t that unusual though, so how is this Zeschuk’s funniest thing?

“We thought, why don’t we take old kung fu footage and redub that for the cut scenes?” he said. “I did most of the voices.”

The duo sent the game concept out to publishers and “people though we were completely insane,” he said.

“We sent it to Interplay and they laughed us out of the building,” Zeschuk said.
