Sega Forms New Studio Just To Make Gangster Games

Sega's Toshihiro "Brown Man" Nagoshi, the creator of the Monkey Ball series, has revealed today that he's formed a new studio at Sega which will deal exclusively with games for the Ryu ga Gotoku (Yakuza) series.

That studio's name is Ryu ga Gotoku Studio (catchy!), and is currently working on two new titles. The first is a sequel to the PSP's Yakuza spin-off, Black Panther, which will be out in 2012.

The second? Yeah, it's Yakuza 5, which will actually be the seventh instalment in the long-running and successful gangster series on a PlayStation console, though information on that one is at a premium (gotta save something to announce at this year's Tokyo Game Show!).

Playing through Yakuza 4 right now, and it's not really grabbing me like Yakuza 3 did. Re-using the same engine and even city just comes across as really lazy, and swapping between characters was fun, until the Cop, who was just... dull. Glad I'm playing as Kiryu again now, but it's been a long slog to get there.

Anyway, hope they decide to re-invigorate the series somehow for 5.

Uh oh, could be be another Sonic Team where the developers end up hating the franchise.

No news on a Of the End localisation? :(

Or the PSP one D: I could only get half way before because there was no walkthrough in English.

    lol, classic sega.

I'm really hating the current trend of pounding out sequels as fast as possible until the franchises bloated corpse finally explodes.
