The Game About Dating Disabled Girls Gets A Trailer

Katawa Shoujo, the game about dating disabled teens, has been in the works for over a decade. It’s from members of webforum 4chan, and over 20 developers worked on it.

The game is now finished and available for download. If you’d like a better idea of what you are getting yourself into, check out the game’s trailer — which, interestingly, quickly shows how the title came to be and evolved over the years.

    • The character you play as has a congenital heart defect, which leaves him weak and susceptible to cardiac arrest under some circumstances. At least one of the girls in that trailer had no arms, and another had significant burn damage to her face.

  • Well put together video, but if you hadn’t told me it was about people with disabilities, I wouldn’t have even known.

Hey maybe that’s actually the whole point! *mind blown*

  • I basically heard of Katawa Shoujo on the day it came out, it was for free and it had a pretty long development time so i thought i might try it out since 4 leaf studios put the effort into.
I only have experience playing one visual novel game (Fate stay night) so i knew what i was getting myself into. So far i have not been dissapointed, i finished one route (girl with burn damage) last night.

Obviously, this is not a game for everyone, but if you have an open mind and would like to try something new or if you know all about the whole visual novel/eroge scene then i definatly recommend this.

  • For anyone who is interested, but scared off by the talk of erotic scenes, there is an option if the game to disable ‘adult content’. I.E auto skip the ero scenes.

  • Played this over the weekend.
This is my first “dating game” and I didn’t know what to expect but considering where it came from I was only too happy to give it a chance.

I’m on my second play through atm and first impressions are very good indeed. Writing and imagery is suberb and although it’s a kooky plot it’s handled with both maturity and finese to rivl the best baw threads ever written.

This is a visual novel so there is a LOT of reading involved. But the writing is very good and it’s only when my body has complained of being in the same position for too long or it gets hungery do I realise just how much time I’ve spent reading/playing. It’s very easy to loose yourself.

    It’s also free.

That these people have put so much time, energy, creative effort and (dare I say it) love into this title and have released it into the wild for free makes this just as special for me as I’m sure it does for them.

I would have to say this is one of (if not the) best game I’ve played in the last twelve months and I just hope it gets the recognition it deserves come the end of the year.

  • There are too few… clickings… I wanted to say choice but it’s not like most other dating sims give you much of a choice but they do tend to let you click more conversation options even if they’re largely useless. I liked that illusion of control.

The writing is pretty good and the visual is nice too. I just never realised how much I would miss the pointless checking of every location I’m use to in all the other dating sims. They really gave me a chance to take a break from reading the stories without actually taking a break from playing.

I do however appreciate the fact you actually work towards the different endings throughout the game. I have once played a game where to get all the endings you: at the end of the game, save, choose a girl from this list, watch ending, load, choose next girl, watch ending, load…
