This is an image of Ganba no Bouken or The Adventures of Ganba. The anime debuted in the mid-1970s. Now, they’re making a CG version, and damn, it looks tragic.

I quite like Ganba! So do many Japanese people. No wonder it’s one of the country’s most beloved anime. Ganba was originally based on a children’s book, but as with Kiki’s Delivery Service, the anime version is one that that has stuck in people’s minds.

Ganba is about a rat who goes on sailing adventures with other rodent companions. The opening theme, with its New Orleans jazz style riffs, is catchy and fun.
There was a movie in the 1980s and the 1990s, both of which stayed true to the look of the original anime. The upcoming CG version is trying something new and looks like this:

Yeah. And here’s a comparison with the original:

Via AnimeAnime, here’s the trailer:
The original Ganba was so striking, so visually interesting. Forget that the designs have changed, the biggest travesty of all is that this looks bland! All of the personality and fun of Ganba look been sucked out by pedestrian computer animation and a lacklustre vision. That’s a shame.

You’d expect them to at least keep the outfits.
They’re unrecogniseable now (though I didn’t recognise them before…)
What in the flying fuck….
Sorta wanna watch the original now. It looks cute as dicks.
lol.. dicks.
I just binge watched a lot of Game Grumps and that phrase has been etched into my mind…
That rat with the dice is rockin’ some sweet facial hair though!
The preview looks nice and bright and colourful, but the scenes they show are so Disney cliché it’s painful.
Writers and directors should be probed with cattle prods for using those damn clichés.
I thought the video showed quite an eastern take on 3D animation. What cliches did you see?
All of them.
I would describe them, but it was every scene so that would be redundant.
I wouldn’t have asked if I knew what you were referring to, answering the question isn’t redundant at all.
I think the new version looks great, although I haven’t seen any of the original, it looks like this new CG version will have a lot more detail and a cool style. However it is essentially unrecognisable and I would probably be pissed off if I cared about the show
Wow, something different Kotaku discusses in Anime other than Dragon Ball Z all the Fucking time!!
What about Dragon Ball? The Original? Or how about moving on and watching some Better upcoming Anime like One Punch Man or a Second season of Nanatsu no Taizai? -_-
just when i thought I was over my crush on Gadget from Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers….
