Can we just appreciate how good the backgrounds in Adventure Time look for a minute? ‘Cause they’re pretty freaking gorgeous.
Of course, while you’re actually watching an episode of Pendleton Ward’s kooky but charming cartoon, it’s easy to overlook the gorgeous visuals. Things move fast, or we focus on the characters. Thankfully, Bahshaynay brings some of the background art on the episodes to our attention.
Check em out — do you recall the episodes in which we first see these locales?
And here are a few backgrounds from Ghostshrimp/Dan James’ website — he’s the creator of Adventure Time’s world.

Those images just scream “Point and Click Adventure”!
would make amazing backdrops for an epic old-school game
^ I was just thinking that.
Generally speaking, I tend to think that while the landscapes and concepts and color choices are all fantastic, for an animation to have flat colors like that is rather clashy. Classic animations had fully hand-painted backgrounds in part because the cels were more identifiable and well-contrasted over the top of them than they would be over more flat-color art like this.
Adventure Time’s a great show because of its use of imagination, its positive behavior, and its flippant introduction of new concepts, though. Not so much because the art was crafted in a masterly fashion.
The only problem I had with that was as a kind I could always tell what was going to happen because a rock or other object that was in the background was coloured in a different style, which removed a lot of the suspense.
I’m in – someone, take my money!
I always thought that when I was watching the show! They really really do
Adventure Time FTW!
Looking at those back drops reminds me of Earthworm Jim for some reason. Anyone else?
Indeed, especially the desert backdrops 🙂
