Mateusz Urbanowicz, aka Mattō, is a Polish artist currently working in Japan at Comix Wave Films animation studio. Which explains not just the focus on Japan in his portfolio, but how he gets past the cliches of cherry blossoms and neon lights and is able to capture some of the more everyday aspects of life. Many of the background pieces you’ll see here were done for Mateusz’s 2012 animated short called Right Places, which you can also watch below.

These are wonderful. Very Miazaki-esque, without being exactly the same. Have to watch that short. Some of the Ramen-related ones remind me of Tampopo, which is always good. Something about scenes from life in Japan…
