In anime and Hollywood movies, you’ll see it: Characters who don’t know how ears work.
This is the “There isn’t an ear there” meme.
Can’t follow? Here, let Ted help:

Traditionally, the worst offender has been kiddy anime Shima Shima Tora no Shimajiro.

See what I mean:

And before, you say, HEY, tigers don’t talk on phones anyway, my reply is that the animators totally know what’s going on. Case in point:

Earphones. But yet other characters…

Side-of-your-head muffs?

The Yokai Watch anime seems to be poking fun at this by having Jibanyan using a headset correctly.

Looks silly, though!

I would argue that one’s not so bad because it’s half way between his ear and his mouth.
Not at his ear, true, but it’s pretty much equidistant between his ear and the phone and his mouth and the phone; so either it’s twice as bad or half as bad; not sure which.
edit: failed reply to MikeTike above.
Just replied to him myself saying practically the same thing before even noticing what you’d said. I’d say it’s reasonable since the phone isn’t big enough to reach both his mouth and ear. With high enough volume and decent enough hearing that should work fine. I’m probably over-thinking this.
Well, over thinking things and then subsequently over-reacting to said things is what the internet’s all about. Personally I think it’s unreasonable that human designed phones would exclusively populate a world of anthropological sentient animals; but that’s a whole other deal. On topic though, I like this meme, dumb and humorous in equal measure; just the way I like the internet.
