This is the Star Trek equivalent of, “You’ve redecorated. I don’t like it.” I can’t help but love it, as tired as jokes about reboot Trek and lens flares are.
The premise is a set up for the upcoming 60th final issue of IDW’s ongoing Star Trek series, out in a couple of weeks. The series, which first began in 2011, has followed the adventures of the J.J. Abrams alternate-reality (now known as the “Kelvin Timeline”) after the events of the reboot series, and before the events of Star Trek Beyond. It’s is coming to a close with a new 50th-anniversary story that brings together the Kelvin and Prime versions of the Enterprise crew for one last story.
In “Connections”, by Mike Johnson with art by Tony Shashteen and Davide Mastrolonado, a bizarre subspace anomaly leads to both Captains Kirk waking up in each other’s body — baffled to find themselves looking at familiar people and locales aboard their ship, yet in radically different ways.
Kelvin-Kirk is more concerned about the colour of his uniform being different, but Prime-Kirk? Like many disgruntled classic Trek fans, he just can’t get over the lens-flare-and-glass-panel-abundant bridge of the new movies.
The two timelines haven’t fully crossed over yet — IDW is saving that for the final issue. But it looks like it’s going to be a pretty fun team up between Enterprises old and new, if playful ribbings like these are anything to go by.
