The Loot Llamas in Fortnite Save The World are changing and becoming less random. Currently, Loot Llamas work like most other loot boxes: Players buy them and then open the llamas to find out what random items they’ve received. Epic Games has announced that an upcoming update will soon change this process.
In the update, V-Buck Llamas are becoming X-Ray Llamas. Before buying these new X-Ray llamas, players will be able to see exactly what they are going to receive. If players don’t like anything in the llama, they can wait until the next day when the contents inside their llama will change.
This change will also show players if a llama is going to upgrade, which happens randomly and improves the loot inside.
Epic is also taking steps to make sure the contents of these X-Ray Llamas are not filled with duplicate items. For example, if the loot llama was planning on giving you a rare shotgun, the game will try to give you a rare shotgun you don’t already have in your collection book or schematics inventory.
Other llamas in Save The World, like Mini Llamas and Event Llamas will not be changed into X-Ray Llamas. These loot box changes are only happening in Save The World. Llamas in Fortnite Battle Royale will continue to work the same way they currently do, with no changes.
Loot boxes have become a controversial element in the gaming industry, with many fans and even law makers pushing back against the practice.

I wonder what player numbers are like comparing Save the World with Battle Royale.
I would estimate 5000:1. No kidding.
Question, i’m assuming that save the world is the original game (the one I wanted). How does one do about obtaining it? I know I can easily download battle royal for free, but I haven’t heard about the other mode
If you download the ‘free version’, when you fire it up it asks you to pick which game to play, either Save The World, or Battle Royale. If you pick Save The World, it will take you to the relevant game store for your device e.g. playstation store for me.
So you still have to pay for it?
Last time I checked, yes.
I thought they said they were going F2P. In 2018.
They were, but they delayed it back in October.

They say it is because it’s not ready and they want to rework the backend and add some features. Which I guess is likely true and a good thing.
But we all know its because they have been focusing on Battle Royale, right? lol
I hope it’s the former and not the latter.
Wait! Since when did Fortnite add loot boxes? Dont play it, but also didnt get that memo.
“Adds Epic Games to my ignore list”… the list is alphabetical so grats your up ther under EA for greedy exploitation
I have a crazy idea, why not just allow us to buy the items we want, from a shop front?
It wasn’t all that long ago that people embraced the randomness of lootboxes. The excitement of not knowing what you got was highlighted by so many streamers having reveal streams and the like. Every time you turned around someone was streaming opening 100 lootboxes they’d bought from viewer donations or something…
Not much changed except public expectations as people realised it was emphasising the gambling aspects too much. They started to think of the children…
Give us both options then. I shouldn’t be forced to pay more because streamers can afford it.
Oh, I agree. And yet, when they do give both, people still whinge. Just look at the doomsayers commenting on Anthem, and them expecting microtransactions/lootboxes to kill the game. A game that isn’t even out yet.
And a game where they are on record saying that lootboxes WILL be there, for cosmetics only, and that you can earn those exact same cosmetics ingame, for free.
And yet the commenters stop reading at ‘lootboxes WILL be there’… Or make the massive assumption that it will be game breaking just because EA is paying for it.
For me, I don’t have much of a problem with lootboxes for cosmetics. If someone is so keen on standing out from the crowd, then rarity means something. You cant get that when you can just buy the item.
If lootboxes give a benefit though, then I have a problem. So far, this doesn’t seem to do that. And even if it did, being able to preview the contents takes away the randomness and makes it a time issue.
Which I have no doubt people will still whinge about.
I stopped playing overwatch after a year of play because I was attempting to get all the dances.
Had I been able to just buy them. No problem. However, I believe I got one dance in thirty loot boxes and 90% was duplicates. Completely put me off the game and never played again.
So much for it being “free” in 2018
I fully predict save the world will be left in development hell forever or will be dropped entirely.
The same thing happened with H1Z1. One the battle royal mode because popular pretty all development stopped for the survival mode.
