It’s been a while since video games visited Frank Herbert’s world of sane and spice. But with a new movie in the works, it turns out we’re getting some new video games, too.
Funcom, makers of the very quirky The Secret World MMO, announced in a short post that they have entered into an “exclusive partnership” that will run for six years. The partnership gives the publisher the rights to release “at least three” titles across PC and consoles, with one game scheduled to be an MMO:
This is a six year partnership to release at least three titles on the PC/Console platforms, with one of the games planned to be in the “Open World Multiplayer” genre that will enter into pre-production in Funcom’s Oslo studio during 2019.
While Dune‘s first foray into video games was through a classic point-and-click adventure, the most well-known adaptation of the franchise was courtesy of RTS masters Westwood. Dune II has been credited with popularising the RTS genre in the early ’90s, laying the structural foundations for the Command & Conquer and Red Alert series that Westwood would go on to be famous for.
The Dune RTS series would eventually get a sequel with Dune 2000, and later on in 2001 with Emperor: Battle for Dune. Dune 2000 has been brought back into relevance more recently through the OpenRA fan project. The original adventure game is playable through a browser through some preservation sites. Dune II has also been converted into HTML5, and you can give the game a whirl in Firefox or Chrome here.
