LEGO Getting A New MMO

Online game developer Funcom revealed today that it's signed a deal with LEGO to make an online game based on LEGO Minifigures.

LEGO Minifigures, of course, are the little inhabitants of the LEGO universe: whether that is knights or policemen, Minifigures have been a LEGO mainstay for decades.

According to the release, "The massively multiplayer online game that Funcom will develop based on the LEGO Minifigures franchise will focus on maximum accessibility. Funcom and the LEGO Group will work together to make the game available to consumers in their online channels and will be coordinating activities to provide a broad and enhanced experience for the product line."

Back in 2010, game developer NetDevil released a LEGO MMO called LEGO Universe. The game's servers were shutdown earlier this year.

"The market for family-friendly online experiences intended for children and youngsters is brimming with potential," says Funcom CEO Trond Arne Aas. "Being able to work with a world-renowned brand such as the LEGO brand to develop an MMO for this audience is incredibly exciting to us as game developers and for Funcom as a company. This is source material we all know and love and we simply cannot wait to get started working with the LEGO Group on realising this exciting project."

They made a HUGE investment in the first one, and I get that they don't want to give up entirely (especially since they're making so much money from minifigures), but I can't help but think that this is a bad idea.

if it's F2P with a cosmetic cash shop, I can see this being a big hit with kids and lego enthusiasts. If they put a sub on it, it will crash and burn faster than the last one

Exactly. A F2P Lego MMO has huge cash potential. Especially if it's browser based.

Or at least allow people outside of the US to play past the trial, LEGO universe was great for the hour i could play it.

I dont get why they didn't add incentive to buying the models to be used in the MMO, for instance buy a pirate lego set , enter a code it comes with and get some hats/outfits or special bricks,

I much prefer my Lego when comes from plastic bags with little tiny holes in them.

They signed up with Funcom? /sigh

Age of Conan crashed and burned.
I tried The Secret World Beta and whilst the concept of what they wanted to do sounded exciting, what they've produced is anything but...

I'm sure that any hype for a Funcom Lego game will not match the end result

    Mmos blow

Minecraft has comprehensively proved that all anyone really wants to do is build stuff. I simply cannot understand why LEGO isn't capitalising on the glaringly obvious position they are in - That is, being the original tool for building elaborate nonsense. Focusing on the minifigs is demented.

I agree with this. They seem to be focusing on the "character" of their brand that has been created over the last decade, rather than the fun true reason of building - why people have used legos for the past 60 years.

Though I fear it may fail, I'll be happy enough if this one actually gets an Australian release.
