Each new Halo game since 2007’s Halo 3 gets some praise, then fades, and then is pointed to as a sign that the Xbox’s once-unstoppable franchise is hitting a wall. Halo 5, released in 2015, deserves a different reputation.

When I first reviewed Crusader Kings II in 2012, I called it "one of the most challenging, entertaining and rewarding strategy games ever played." Five years later, it turns out that was only the beginning of my long journey with the game.
Batman: Arkham Knight spins one of the most ambitious video game stories ever told, and watching it thunder to its conclusion is like watching a 747 successfully land on a helicopter pad. It may not be known for its narrative, but that is its achievement -- a spiraling and notably interactive tale that takes you inside the mind of one of popular culture's most enduring and fascinating figures.
It's 2016. Bearing this in mind, go play a shooter from 2010. Or a sports game. Or, well, anything else from 2010. Look how (relatively) basic it is! Notice how advances in game design and technology have rendered so many of these former classics obsolete. Now go and play Civilization V. I'll see you in six months. If we're lucky.
