Disney Buys Lucasfilm, Planning Star Wars Episode 7

Not technically games news, but we thought you might want to be across this, considering Lucasfilm's history in video games, and because... Star Wars. News is breaking that Disney has just bought Lucasfilm for the grand sum of $4.05 billion and aims to release an official new Star Wars movie in 2015.

Until now, Lucasfilm was 100% owned by George Lucas, meaning he pockets the entire sum.

"Lucasfilm reflects the extraordinary passion, vision, and storytelling of its founder, George Lucas," said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. "This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney’s unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value."

George Lucas claims it's all about passing the torch.

"For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” he said. "It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products."

There is a definite plan in place to create a Star Wars Episode 7. That will be happening (whether you like it or not!) and George Lucas will apparently still play a part in production, serving as a consultant on the movie, whilst Kathleen Kennedy, the new President of Lucasfilm will produce the movie.

Pretty incredible news.

Guess they felt like the hurricane was taking up too much attention, so they decided to create an internet-shitstorm.

      +1 billion.

      comment of the day.

Agreed. They should have #COTD awards on kotaku/allure

      Comment of the decade!

Oh dear. Please don't Disney all over it, Disney. E.g EP VII could be about the brutal evisceration of Jar Jar Binks as he was a Sith in disguise the whole time.

You saw the Robot Chicken Star Wars Special...didn't you.

Yay! I can't wait to see Jar Jar! I want to see more! I love him sooooo much, I don't want him to be in the background like the other two movies again! You know what, I think he should sing, and then dance with Hugh Jackman from the Boy from Oz, and you know what next, they should both get lightsabers and dance-and-stab, dance-and-stab, dance-and-stab, and then they should strip their pants off and get fivers with Magic Mike! We love them; their so hunky!

Thank God Lucas no longer has creative control. Maybe the new trilogy will actually be good.

Nope will be Star wars Ep7: The adventures of Jar Jar Bink.

Episode 7 will be all family friendly and John Carter-ish, then you'll be begging to have George back.

Ah, so you're the person who saw John Carter.

Well, Disney didn't do the Avengers franchise any harm ... here's hoping.

i am both happy and saddened by this :/

please dont hurt it mr disney

I've got a bad feeling about this...

In terms of the entertainment they produce, Disney are awesome and unparalleled.
In terms of evil Empire corporation status, they aren't that much worse than what Lucasfilm became :P

I see no reason for trepidation.

        ^this x 1000000

Ya know, I really think Disney could nail it. The Pirates of the Caribbean movies proved they can make "family friendly" movies that can be awesome. Plus, yeah, they can't exactly ruin Star Wars more than George Lucas already has.

    Episode 7?

Yeah, I'm betting on some ewok-centric disney piece of crap, set entirely on Endor. It will have zero plot and centre on the death of Wicket.

On the plus side hopefully the deal will mean that Lucas is now no longer allowed to "remaster" the first 3 films anymore.

      Swings & roundabouts

You forget that Disney was behind Pirates of the Carribean, which was often quite dark and violent. I shouldn't be surprised if we get a decent movie out of this.

and disney is in charge of all of the marvel movies...

just saying that "disney" doesn't mean kids stuff anymore

What about Caravan of Courage and Battle for Endor?
The entire family died except Cindel. Do they mean nothing to you!!!!! :(

It's as if a million souls all cried out at once....

Well there are only 2 possible outcomes for this, they are on par with the prequel or they are actually good!

      Directed by Michael Bay :P

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.

          Uwe Bol...

Han is required, as is he played by Ford.

Picturing luke and yoda kiipping along the swampy marshes of hoth, holding hands, to the song "you got a friend in me"

      *skipping, derp phone

      Hoth is an ice planet.

I met him in a swamp down in dagobah
Where it bubbles all the time like a giant carbonated soda

        "Weird Al Yankovic"

Thanks, now I'll have that song in my head all day...

Seeing as the best star wars movie (ESB) wasn't written or directed by George Lucas I have hope that as a consultant it'll be handled well.

Does this mean we'll see more 90's style point and click games again?

      *crosses fingers* pleasepleaseplease

In the meantime, there's always games like Anna's Quest to tide us over.

Wow! The kid in me is super excited about this, while the adult me is dejected and dubious.

At least it will be better than those family guy star wars tribute comedic abortions

I'm applying the Red Dwarf principle to this. The franchise has been damaged for a long time. More movies can't make things worse, and might make things better. Plus I trust Disney - they know quality entertainment. #Optimism

Depends who the target demographic is

The new series will probably be shit. I suppose they have an audience though. It's a start!

        and you're basing that on...?

Basing what on? IMO the last three series have been tired rehashed drivel. Even the new production is omitting any reference to the previous season.

Actually, the new series of Red Dwarf is pretty damned good. I'd say it's easily the best since Rob Grant left.

Runs a distant second to series 1-6, but beats the absolute tar out of series 8 and Back To Earth. I'd put it about on keel with series 7, which I felt was equally inconsistent and ultimately disappointing, but with occasional flashes of genius that were sufficient to encourage me to hang on.

I'm just glad they figured out they NEED a laugh track for that kind of humour to really work. If no one else is laughing, it's just mean.

It's not a laugh track (believe it or not). It's filmed live in front of an audience.

Ep 2: Fathers and Suns is hilarious!

As it doesn't legally air - terrestrial in oz - till next week I will have to wait.

Which is not saying a lot..... ;-)

Well.. Kingdom Hearts now got more strange... or awesome? Sora + Mickey vs Darth Vader?

Pixar and Marvel and Lucas. Oh, my!

Best news to wake up to.

We're off to see the wizard! The wonderful wizard of Adumur .

    R2D2 + WallE = Awesome robot overload

Okay, Disney bought Lucasfilm and is making star wars. It's not going to be bad. Why does everyone seem to think that Disney doesn't know what they are doing? They own Marvel and look at the Avengers. Fantastic. Look at the lead up to that, those movies were great. The Amazing Spider-Man (IMO) fantastic. EDIT: Okay Spider-man was not made by Disney, the point still stands on the Avengers and the Avengers lead ups.

Did anyone see a single dance number or children's musical in that list or in those movies? I didn't. Disney knows how to make good movies, they will do their best on Episode 7 but it won't be good enough if people won't give it a chance

I guess the mess that Pirates devolved into still leaves a bad taste in everyone's mouths.

So did the mess that Star Wars devolved into. Things can't get worse, so we might as well be optimistic :D

          ...are you an angel?

It's Halloween, so Imma say no.

Pretty much exactly what I was thinking. How could it get any worse than it did? May as well give someone else a go! Clearly George Lucas lost the plot (literally and figuratively) some time ago, would love to see what some fresh eyes can do with the franchise.

      Didn't Sony make spiderman??????!

Hahaha funny you chose Spiderman as your example seeing as Spiderman is one of the only ones NOT made by Disney. Sony owns the rights to this character and all movies are produced by them.

I don't believe they had a lot of say in Amazing Spiderman. Pretty sure that was all Sony.

Sony made TASM as the own the movie rights not Marvel/Disney

You realise their is a spider man musical?? Not done by Disney but still.... You never know....

One of the Disney made episodes of new series utimate spiderman IS A MUSICAL.

Ultimate Spider man series, not at all the Amazing Spider Man movie

Thanks for repeating what I said. Your point is?

Further you do realise that the Avengers had been in film development for FIVE years before Disney bought marvel?

I'm keen to see more Star Wars films but I'm rather troubled by the prospect that Disney would be doing it. Whatever happens, I'll be keen until I see something off-putting. I guess I'm still a massive Star Wars fan...
